Q: New iMac 27inch screen flickering/tearing/shutoff

I have been experiencing some problems with the all new iMac 27inch display.
At non-fixed intervals i will get one of the following:

Screen distortion/flicker somewhere random in the screen (feels like it is more in the lower part) that looks like a horizontal bar of about 2-3inches just popping in and out of the screen.

Screen will go completely black for a second and then come back on. Sometimes 2-3 times in a row.

Somebody else already made some video-clips about these problems, I am experiencing exactly the same behaviour.

Just to not that in the course of writing this post my screen has flickered 13 times and has gone black 2 times.

    Hi,

Me too. I´ve bought the iMac 27" 3,06 Ghz the last days of last year. I have the exact same problems. Flickering/tearing/shutoff. I´m in contact with a nice gay att Apple Support. I´ve done all the keyboard -shutingoff tings. Now I have installed OS X om a separate harddrive running the computer from here. Testing if the problems still is there. I´m feeling that I´m working for Apple. But if "we" can resolve the problem it´s okay.

It´s getting a bit annoing. When I´m reding all the post here (not all, over 200) I´m getting seriously afraid. I bought the computer from a certified store because there was a 2 weeks ordering time att Apple Store. This *****, because I have have to return it there if we can´t solve the problems and I´m starting to get a "no good felleing" about this. When I talked to the store, they reederected me to Apple Support.

I have been sending photos an movies to (the nice gay) at Apple and i think that they are working hard to solve all our problems. But now it feels a little hopeless.

Perhaps I shold wait and don´t panic.

Anayway, it´s incredible that so many computers from Apple has this exact same problem.

I decided to try the fan strategy, I hadn't seen that before.

Downloaded smcFanControl and ran the fans full-on all afternoon. It's had the effect of dropping the operating temperature by 10 degrees (46 to 36C), but unfortunately the flicker still happens just as often. It's much louder but actually a lot more comfortable to sit in front of.

My question to the people who keep trying to minimise this thread... what is your motivation? I don't see why it would bother you that people with iMac problems would be discussing them on a (gasp) iMac discussion forum. People will continue to post as long as the issue persists, stop trying to control dissent.

Hey - first post on here though I've been watching for a few weeks now. I'm currently awaiting my 2nd iMac (due to be delivered this Friday) after my first (delivered end of Nov 09) developed the screen flickering issue.

Having read most of the posts on here, and being within my 14 days I decided to just send it back and try my luck with another one. I'll let you know how it goes!

I am absolutely appalled that Apple haven't properly responded to this - let alone apologised! I've been waiting nearly a month for my replacement and have been (like all of you I'm sure) massively inconvenienced. And the thing wasn't cheap. It's my first experience with Apple - and it isn't good.

I'll let you know how the new one works out anyway as it must be one of the most recent models - I'll post serial number when I have it.

    Good luck everyone.

I've had my cable and panel replaced and I'm still experiencing flickering. No more "tearing" (which I had before), but still, the problem is not completely solved either. Still having flickers and black-outs (of about 0.5 seconds).

Didn't do any migration of my previous Leopard system this time.

    Thanks for reporting this.

Well, then we can say that replacing the screen and screen-cables is not a permanent fix for everyone what it seems.

I am offended,... I am at 28 posts on this subject not counting this one,....

BTW my co worker I27 still is fine build 46, I post to ask questions since the only problem I have is Apple not comming clean where from reputation they are usually standup.

    still offended though

This issue only affects a very small percentage of the new models that Apple has produced and sold. By the end of this quarter, the number of those machines will be in the multiple millions, and just 1 or 2 percent of that will amount to 40,000 machines or more with these defects. Personally, I believe the percentages are much lower, some think higher. Currently, all of the numbers available indicate much smaller percentages, but that could change.

Even with those small percentages, there are a lot of people, with machine issues, and they deserve resolution, and support.

    ..............

Numerous people reported screen flickering on two, three, or even four subsequent computers. Statistically this points to substantially more, than 1% defect rate. Some cases of blinking screen are probably not very severe and users can live with it, but it still makes a faulty computer.

More than 3000 posts on the same issue in less than three months after the product launch also tels us something. And how many people with the problem didn't come here at all? Only Apple knows, but they ain't talking. I honestly hope they work on the issue.

And yes, many people watch this thread, checkbook in the pocket, undersigned being one of them...

I haven't experienced one single flicker or shutoff since yesterday, when I decided to turn my iPhone and Logitech wireless mouse off. There is no other cellphone in a 15 meter radius and the closest cellphone tower is 1 or 2 kilometers away. This is it, I'm 99% positive.

This topic is popular because Apple is still not providing any update about the issue. This is the only place where people can get regular updates from global users. So thanks to all keeping this topic live.

It may surprise you but looking at the posts and Apple's reaction to the people having the problem, I've decided not to wait further and order my iMac i7 which will arrive on February. Yes it can have the flickering problem but at least I know that Apple will replace or repair the computer. This will be my first Apple experience so my fingers are crossed.

Has anyone with the flicker/tearing issue tried using a wired keyboard and mouse instead of wireless? My apologies if this has been discussed earlier (I can't remember).
    Just a thought?

I hope your Cell Phone Theory works for you. But my Flicker did not start until 5 days of use. And there is not one Cell Phone in my Home.
