Q: New iMac 27inch screen flickering/tearing/shutoff

I have been experiencing some problems with the all new iMac 27inch display.
At non-fixed intervals i will get one of the following:

Screen distortion/flicker somewhere random in the screen (feels like it is more in the lower part) that looks like a horizontal bar of about 2-3inches just popping in and out of the screen.

Screen will go completely black for a second and then come back on. Sometimes 2-3 times in a row.

Somebody else already made some video-clips about these problems, I am experiencing exactly the same behaviour.

Just to not that in the course of writing this post my screen has flickered 13 times and has gone black 2 times.

I haven't experienced one single flicker or shutoff since yesterday, when I decided to turn my iPhone and Logitech wireless mouse off. There is no other cellphone in a 15 meter radius and the closest cellphone tower is 1 or 2 kilometers away. This is it, I'm 99% positive.

Interesting theory. How often were you seeing flicking before you turned off your iPhone and wireless mouse?

I'm not totally convinced yet, but this theory would explain why some people see replacement after replacement exhibit the same problem, while hundreds of thousands of others are apparently sold without the issue.

Maybe there is a shielding issue with the LCD panel/cable?

Good point. Apple devices are surely tested with each other too?

We need somebody, who has two iMacs:

    one that is o.k.
    one that is flickering

Try to exchange the location of the two machines!

Someone has probably already pointed this out.
Interestingly Apple wanted this Imac to be "eco-friendly". I wonder what the environmental impact has been due to all these returns / fixes / replacements so far...

Well that was a bust. I wake the computer from sleep this morning and after about 5 minutes I've been getting the screen flickering and on/off of the screen. Its driving me nuts that Apple can't man up and get this fixed. I guess I jinxed myself with my post last night. It was great not having any problems for a week but it looks like I'm right back to where I was. FRUSTRATED!!!!

I don't have 2 but off topic a bit. I was at a client's home yesterday who has the 24" iMac, version before ours & checked his Screen. Perfect! No Yellow & No Flickers. Reason I checked because I dug deeper & found out there were some problems with his version iMac Screens as well. But his is Gorgeous!

What gets me is the latest imac's are only a refresh.
I mean it's not as if they are using some kind of newfangled technological
breakthrough in technology thats never been seen by humans before!!!!
it's pretty much all off the shelf stuff inside. (well nearly anyway).
screens flicker before and after software fix.
    screens flicker when hot.
    screens flicker when cold.
screens flicker when near a mobile phone.
screens flicker when they are not.
screens flicker after graphics card replacment.
screens flicker after logic board replaced.
screens flicker after panel & cable replacment.

Maybe it's the plug! or the fuse!
They are about the only things there is left to replace!

What a big cockup this is!

Yes, and now I remember a post in this thread, where somebody reported that he has seen in the same store some good and some faulty machines. This would mean, that the theory with the magnetic interferences is wrong.

Maybe Apple-Techs are helpless as we are.

I do not think it interferance but packing and travel bumps, but I thought I would give his setup. I have however run into to bad ones in store, one was an apple store and the other was a reseller. but that was jan 5, 2010

After looking again at this site:
    http://imac.squeaked.com/results.php
I'm noticing the percentage of us 21.5" Users is only about a quarter of the amount of defects of that of the 27" Users. I'm thinking it's just because there were more 27" sold in the past 2 Months. I suck at Math! Pazuita, Your the Mathematician. Does this sound correct?

Then there is this site as well. Check it out!

ive been speaking to executive relations today.....

i was given the impression the chap knew all about the troubles, he was very sympathetic towards my problems and listened to my concerns!

he is going to call me back tomorrow to discuss how were moving forward from here..... (he asked if i wanted another imac to which i said no)

and also took the serial number of my last unit as its going to apple engineering in cupertino and hes ringing the manager of the store to discuss my situation....

im happy that apple are willing to listen to consumers and the chap couldnt have been any nicer!

Ok. First time on this forum (I' ve been reading on this forum since I got my iMac i7 8Gb RAM on december 31st. Week 52 machine and my first Apple ever. Because I use computer a lot for photo editing, I thought that this 27" screen would fit me perfectly (also the fast i7 for working in Lightroom). And it IS a beautiful screen!
    Since the beginning I do have some flickering issues (in the beginning every now and then)...also black out for a fraction of a second. I was offered DOA by Apple and could swap it for a new one within 2 weeks. BUT, I didn' t do it for a number of reasons;
    - I need my computer every day of the week (and cannot miss it for a few weeks...cannot hold it till a new one arrives).
    - I refuse to take another flickering screen with me (and after that possibly another one/etc.)...seems like that' s the case with many who change for a new machine.
    - I have Apple Care....and with Apple I can send it in for reparation as soon as either I begin to get fed up with the flickering..OR when the flickering / black out gets worse. At the moment Apple doesn' t seem to have a clue what the problem is excactly (let alone how to repair it)...that might become the case however within a certain period of time (although I must say it does take a long time already).

I cannot believe how some over here find it difficult to believe that this problem really exists (and on a scale Apple simply cannot allow it happening).
I' ll be back here...reading and maybe posting. I' m convinced that many read here and have the same problem (without posting anything, but hoping for an answer from Apple).
    Thank you all.

Mujanast, I agree with you completely and I am feeling in exactly the same boat. I need that computer for work EVERY day, so I can't just send it back and wait for a new one...and risking the exact same problems. I AM trying to be patient, but I can't also help but worry that each and every day that passes, I am going to still end up regretting my purchase and eventually have to deal with a repaired machine, and possibly a lack of 100% fix, or possibly lose out of a swap-with-proper-working-machine offer simply because I am being patient and waiting until the problem is resolved. If only Apple would give us some sort of reassurance that we WILL get proper working machines, so we can just continue to hold on and find a way to put this out of our minds for now.
