Q: New iMac 27inch screen flickering/tearing/shutoff

I have been experiencing some problems with the all new iMac 27inch display.
At non-fixed intervals i will get one of the following:

Screen distortion/flicker somewhere random in the screen (feels like it is more in the lower part) that looks like a horizontal bar of about 2-3inches just popping in and out of the screen.

Screen will go completely black for a second and then come back on. Sometimes 2-3 times in a row.

Somebody else already made some video-clips about these problems, I am experiencing exactly the same behaviour.

Just to not that in the course of writing this post my screen has flickered 13 times and has gone black 2 times.

So I guess that would leave out the possibility of it being a Snow Leopard or software problem. That's great! Thanks!

... and 10.6.3 will not resolve the problem. We are on page 1!

This is my second iMac, got it after the "2 week delay".
Just as bad as the last one: flickering, blackout, distortion.

This is my video, sorry for the bad recording.

I can't add anything based on having a 27" (my i7 ships this week) but I have setup linux on many PCs over the years. The Xserver (graphics) settings are critical to get matched to the display chipset and display itself. If you don't get it right, you get flicker and torn images. I have read almost every posts in this thread and it doesn't sound like hardware. I for one, think it is a software problem. Specifically, I think it's a sync problem. If I had my imac, I would try playing with the resolution, color depth, and screen size (assuming you can mess with V & H size, keystone, etc.).

The yellow screen I do think is a display issue. The spacers between LCD conductors will add a hue.

Right Skullcat....it' s about time Apple lets everyone know what' s in their mind. Guarantee a fix......and I' m happy. Otherwise my next computer will be a Windows again.

Interesting. I have imedlety switcht to Apple RGB. I should be quite silly if it´s taking away the flickering

    Utsava,

With the phone and Logitech mouse on, I was experiencing 1 or 2 flickers a minute and about 2 shutoffs every hour. Whenever an E-Mail was being pushed to my iPhone, it was something like 1 flicker every 2 seconds. When I received a phone call, the flickering was almost constant and the backlight shut off 4 or 5 times every minute.

It's been almost a day since I turned the phone and mouse off and the screen has worked like a charm. Not one flicker or shutoff.

The Magic Mouse, wireless keyboard and AirPort don't have any effect on my screen.

Right now, I'm pretty convinced that electromagnetic perturbations from a particular range of frequencies are the root of the problem.

I'll keep my phone off until tomorrow to establish an even better baseline.

It could very well be a shielding issue.

It would make sense if it's SW/FW related considering that around the 'net (not just in this thread), people have been saying the FW update (ATI flasher), has either: a) solved issue, b) not solved issue, c)caused issue, where before there was none. Could be a manufacturer defect in the relating to the chipset, so that, many, but not all of the cards have, issues that would otherwise be solvable by a FW/SW update, but can't be because of minor defect. Therefore, some are, and some aren't? Unfortunately the 21.5's also have an albeit lower reportage of such issues. Question: are the 21.5's with issues that people have seen reported on the 9400M as well? or just the ATI's? (We really want one of these new machines, it's kinda holding us up a little...) thanks for all the input again everyone. And thanks for additional links to reports databases!

Ok. It's my time to do the conspiracy thing.
My last imac was fine for 12 days (apart from mild yellow).
On the 13th day I started to look generally at the subject of the flickering.
I googled it, then went to a website which had an artical on the imac flicker.
Within 2 seconds of entering this website it started flickering. and did so for the rest of the time I had it.. "SPOOKY"

A shielding issue seems like a interesting theory. I´m in to electrics and this causes a lot of bad things. Even when you don´t believe in it. Try to solve that in the software /-:

So what is the latest from apple support, do they just replace iMacs with flickering? From what I have read in this thread and other there seems to be tons of iMacs with problems?!!

But I see almost no posts/coverage in the techblogs/magazines?

21.5 NVidia Yellow Tinge & Screen Flicker. I'm not the only one. There are others. It's not the ATI!

Gille, one of the other Belgians in this forum posted yesterday that he was sending back his fourth Mac replacement for a refund but it got lost in the noise.

I called AppleCare this morning and a tech will call me tomorrow to discuss a repair. I'm insisting that they replace the Vertical Sync cable and the Screen which seems to have worked for most people but unfortunately not for everyone :0(

    Hope it works for me.

I was also wondering if Megallis could introduce me to his nice tech gay in sweden? ;0)

    Wish me luck!
