Q: New iMac 27inch screen flickering/tearing/shutoff

I have been experiencing some problems with the all new iMac 27inch display.
At non-fixed intervals i will get one of the following:

Screen distortion/flicker somewhere random in the screen (feels like it is more in the lower part) that looks like a horizontal bar of about 2-3inches just popping in and out of the screen.

Screen will go completely black for a second and then come back on. Sometimes 2-3 times in a row.

Somebody else already made some video-clips about these problems, I am experiencing exactly the same behaviour.

Just to not that in the course of writing this post my screen has flickered 13 times and has gone black 2 times.

no you do have a point but although im not going into it in detail, apple and I have come to a fair deal which i feel i should take, im not majorly fussed about the 2010 macpro's what if their full of aggro like the imacs? plus they MAY cost more and ill miss out on my deal.

    appreciate the concern though, thanks

Update: Just to say it's been a week since I had the screen and cable replaced to fix my flickering problem and all is well. Still not completely relaxed that it's fixed forever, but maybe, just maybe...

sparkie sorry to see you leave. But I'm not getting your post. You made a deal with Apple to get a Mac Pro instead? And then you mention Apple in Cupertino fixing your iMac? I'm confused! Is the iMac that they are fixing still yours or your swapping it for a Mac Pro? Btw, sparkie, we were never the 5 trolls. We are & always will be the 5 Cats!

    hey dino!

no i didnt say their fixing it, i was saying their shipping it over to try and find the problems with the faulty units, i guess they'll get a selection and try to find some common ground between them all.

so unfortunately their not fixing it, the impression i got is they dont know how to fix it.

Hey sparkie, Well it sounds like your getting a good deal on the Mac Pro, so that is great. I don't think they know how to fix it either but I'm sure they'll find out. Everything can be fixed. They made iMacs before that had perfect screens & they also made iMacs before that had less than perfect screens. Enjoy your Mac Pro & don't forget us iMac Cats!

    Hi folks.

I've just jumped off the grimey old PC steam engine, so I can hopefully cross to the other platform and board the Mac express.

However, I've heard about the problems, and I've been reading closely. So I've taken my luggage (including my wallet) off for the moment. I've even been in a couple of Mac stores, where they've confirmed these issues (off the record).

Just wanted to say hi and thanks for being a source of information. The only source of information, so all the more valuable for that.

Hopefully, with the world's spotlight fixed on them next week, Apple will try hard to get these iMac problems sorted. But as Sparkie quite rightly said, we'll just have to hang in there.

That's what I intend doing (I loved the i7, apart from the flicker), so if the next one turns up bad, I'll send it back, or if it starts after the 14 days I'll get it repaired.

That's what I'm hoping for as well. I had a Week 45 i5 that I absolutely loved. It was blazingly fast (I couldn't slow it down if I tried!) and the screen was beautiful (yes, yellow tinge present and accounted for) but it flickered four times during the ten days I had it and it went back for a refund. I had no idea that here, over +two months+ later the issue hasn't been rectified. I'm sure the engineers at Apple are pulling out their hair over this and the marketing/PR folks aren't sure exactly how to approach the possibility of a recall. I'll just have to be patient! I've already decided to wait for the next refresh, but even then I'll have to play it safe to make sure some new issues don't crop up.

    Hi,

Just to add to this, i'm on my second iMac 27 and it looks like i've got another one that flickers. I got the first one early December (3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo base model) and it took about a week for the flickering to appear (flickered every minute or so). I've now got a 2.66GHz Intel Core i5 one (week 50) and its just started to flicker but only twice so far. I was told by the store that all of the problems had been fixed and my other iMac that i returned, was the only one returned due to the screen flicker. Even though i knew this wasn't true (as i've been keeping an eye on the forum as it continues to grow), i thought i couldn't be that unlucky to get another one that flickers.

As mentioned above, the flicker on this one has only happened a few times (that i've noticed anyway). Has anyone else just noticed one or two flickers here and there and then its gone away? or do you think its likely to get worse.

I love the iMac but i don't want to move/transfer all of my PC files/emails over to the iMac until i know i've got one that doesn't flicker.

WOW! 219 pages so far. Only read a few of the posts but....

We bought a refurbed 27" iMac (see spec below) which arrived today and already the flickering is getting pretty constant.

We've downloaded the patch and checked the software is up to date but it still does it.

We took out AppleCare but only noticed the fault after their telephone hotline has closed for the evening and without any email facility (what is with that?!) we'll need to call them first thing.

REALLY hoping we don't have to return this as I'm not sure how it would work since this was a refurb? Would they replace this with a non-refurbed one or would we just have to wait for another similar model to turn up?

Any advice would be appreciated before I call them in the morning.

    Thanks. : )

The refurb has the same warranty as a new one. No need to worry.

They will try and replace the unit with a refurb, if one is available, if not, they may offer you the option of a new machine instead.

Since there have been quite a few units returned with the flickering issue, I would suspect they have quite a few on hand, so most likely, you will get the refurb.

They may offer you the option of a repair, rather than a replacement. That may be your best option if there is an Apple Store, or authorized repair center nearby.

The main thing is, call Apple and get a case number, they will tell you your options.

    Thanks for that pazuita.

I'll call them in the morning and see what they say. Annoyingly we're due to go away for a few days as of tomorrow so it'll need to wait til we come back if they come to pick it up or we have to take it up to the Apple Store in Glasgow.

I'll keep an eye on this forum for any updates.

    Thanks again, Anna
