Q: New iMac 27inch screen flickering/tearing/shutoff

I have been experiencing some problems with the all new iMac 27inch display.
At non-fixed intervals i will get one of the following:

Screen distortion/flicker somewhere random in the screen (feels like it is more in the lower part) that looks like a horizontal bar of about 2-3inches just popping in and out of the screen.

Screen will go completely black for a second and then come back on. Sometimes 2-3 times in a row.

Somebody else already made some video-clips about these problems, I am experiencing exactly the same behaviour.

Just to not that in the course of writing this post my screen has flickered 13 times and has gone black 2 times.

sorry, if i repeat something a other wrote. but i am no native speaker and there are to much postings for me, to read them all. yesterday i solved the problem with flickering iMac display by mounting timecapsule …

i recognized, that my iMac don't start after shut him down. i took the manual and did everything, written in it. it did not work. so i phoned the support. it needed long time for giving data +(i could not look at my iMac … needed paperwork …)+ and during the second being on hold i tried to put the power cable directly to the electric socket at the wall and not to the distribution board +(hope, it is the right word)+. it worked! my iMac started again!

i asked the phonesupport, and they told me, it could be, that the distribution board gives the iMac to less power to start up.

and now i recogniced, that the monitor is not flickering anymore, when time machine mounts the time capsule! hooray!

Of course it´s a bit intereresting to hear of all the repairs. But what happendend to the self-actions?

My iMac i manufactured week 43. I have had flickering and blackout problems. I´ve done all actions and tests mentioned here having contact with Apple Support/care.

At the moment I have the screen in "Apple RBG" mode instead of "iMac". Have had it like that för two days, running the computer about 4-5 hours a day.

At the moment. No flickering or blackouts. Everything seems to be good. But I´m waiting ...

I´ll get back. Wishing you all the best.

    maredi, Hi Austria

Please, further axplain what do you nean by the "distribution board"?
Is it a socket för connecting several units like printer, lamps e.g.? And now you plugged into directly the wall? Or?

    Thanks.

Do you mean a socket distributor (Steckdosenverteiler)?

    Hi everyone,

Just an update on my situation... Apple Store online had asked that we send iMac #3 back in for replacement, but after so many weeks of having no machine I politely insisted that we be allowed to hang on to the yellowy/flickery/whiny/dead-pixelly one we have while the new one was in transit.

After calling around to a couple of local Apple Retail stores (which I thought was nice), the representative managed to find someone who was willing to handle the exchange in person. It's due to arrive Feb 9. Amazingly, I even got an email confirming the shipment this time!

I then spoke to a very professional and courteous person in Executive Relations today who assures me that we will get a machine that is fully functional and free of any defects, and acknowledged that what's been happening is not the "Apple experience" and that the problem is being addressed.

For anyone else who is experiencing this issue, take heart that it's not in your imagination.

I use a socket distributor that has a high voltage protection for example lightening strucks and so on. I´m beginning to think that I might put the computer directly into the wall socket.

It sounds crazy if the computer i so sensitive that some kind of disturbence in the power supply could cause all this.

    Hmm ... I´m thinking.

Unfortunately I suspect plugging directly into the wall outlet will not permanently fix the problem. Many on here (me included) tried this and whilst it may improve the problem short-term the flickers invariably come back.
One of the suggestions from AppleCare is to reset the SMC which involves unplugging the power cord, waiting 20 or 30 seconds and then replugging into the power and restarting. Again this only seems to give an interim solution with the flickers always returning. Unplugging from a power strip and plugging directly into the mains socket is in effect a reset of the SMC.

    Hi Guys,
I've just spoken to two very helpful (and honest!) Apple people regarding the flickering issue (one of them an engineer)...
I'm still within my 14 day 'remorse' period (with 6 days remaining), so the question is: replacement, repair or refund?
Just a bit of advice for anyone in the same position as me: apparently, if you take your iMac in for a repair, this will nullify your 'remorse' agreement (ie: legal right to a refund).
So, I spoke to my local Apple Store to ask if they could give me a cast iron (or thereabouts) guarantee that their engineers has sussed the problem out and the problem is fixable.
The immediate reply (without any hesitation) was "send it back and/or ask for a refund/replacement".

.....which would strongly indicate to me that they still haven't got to the bottom of the problem.

So, that narrows it down: refund or replacement.

I was told that it would be 'highly unlikely' that a replacement would have the same problems.
However, after reading the continuing comments of this thread, I'm not so sure!!!

So, with 6 days left of my 'remorse' period, I'll be watching this forum avidly for the next few days for signs of a 'breakthrough'!

If not, by the weekend I'll be (sadly) asking for my hard earned money back.....

(and maybe order again in a few months time if they can manage to get their act together, resolve this problem and start shipping glitch-free models....)

    I live in hope!

    Cheers!
    Ade

Well, I've been at a friend to switch from his PeeCee for more than a year now .. and he finally did .. he was as excited as a kid in a toyshop ....

He had his iMac 27 inch delivered a week ago, and WITHIN 5 HOURS he had the flickering, dock ending up at the top of the screen, screen going black ,.,,,,

Apple rep told him this morning that they will collect and said " it's a worldwide fault, we thought it had been fixed".....

They aren't sending anymore out until they sort the problem - again .....

    At least 2-3 weeks.

NOT a great impression of Apple I'm afraid and feel real guilty as he has a whole host of photographs to edit for two wedding couples and is now without the means to do so ......

I have had my 27" iMac for lest than two weeks and have had the same problem as mentioned. The first few days were fine but then it started with a couple of flickers and then the black screen issue as well. Yesterday I was using it for about 3 hours and had at least one flicker every 5 minutes.

It is totally unacceptable that Apple have not made a public statement about this issue, the number of people suffering from this proves that it is integral to the design of the machine.

I now have to return it and incur the cost of the taxi/courier to and from the mac store. Should I not get this refunded as part of consumer rights? Why has the Firmware fix not been removed as the answer as it has absolutely no effect whatsoever? My Machine was bought after Christmas and the firmware update had been installed before I got it, this obviously doesn't work.

Here is an update to my situation. My 27" i7 iMac was returned to Apple on Jan. 4 (received by Apple Jan. 6). My status had been showing a ship date of Jan. 19 (deliver Jan. 22) until this morning. I received an e-mail from Apple stating my replacement machine would be delivered between Feb. 1-3, about a week and a half delay. I'm still confident this will all be resolved. I will say I miss the Magic Mouse. The Mighty Mouse pales in comparison.

    hi!

as kasperl wrote it right: i meant "socket distributor" (Steckdosenverteiler), a thing, where you can plug in more than one power cable and this thing you plug in the one socket in the wall. hope, it is clear now, otherwhile i'll make a photo.

    with kind regards,
    margot

    hi!

you are right, but unplugging and plugging again into the distributor did not help here …

mardedi, I too have a Time Capsule & I can tell you it will not help your Screen Flicker or any other problem your iMac is having. If you had a Flicker problem, it will be back.
