Q: New iMac 27inch screen flickering/tearing/shutoff

I have been experiencing some problems with the all new iMac 27inch display.
At non-fixed intervals i will get one of the following:

Screen distortion/flicker somewhere random in the screen (feels like it is more in the lower part) that looks like a horizontal bar of about 2-3inches just popping in and out of the screen.

Screen will go completely black for a second and then come back on. Sometimes 2-3 times in a row.

Somebody else already made some video-clips about these problems, I am experiencing exactly the same behaviour.

Just to not that in the course of writing this post my screen has flickered 13 times and has gone black 2 times.

I am a firm believer in "less work".....that's why I use a Mac in the first place.

The big advantage I see in using a cloning application, is that you crank it up, and leave it. Come back a while later, and everything is done for you.

I have tried that, "starting from scratch" thing before...never has worked for me. Always miss something, somewhere, and don't realize it until you really need it.

Sorting through several decades worth of backups is more than I ever care to do again, you'd know how bad it was if you saw my filing system. Still come across boxes of 5 1/4's and 3 1/2's all of the time, even an occasional 8", still can't believe anyone ever used those things.

    Occams Razor clearly applies here.

Warren Beasely wrote earlier: "Do the 24" iMacs also use the LG Tech. LCD's? I am assuming that they do."

WHAT! Does Apple use LG screens? Here is probably the biggest problem. LG is former Goldstar known to make C-products before becoming LG.

If I did know that, I never should have bought an iMac.

    This isn´t good at all.

Hello all, just wanted to tell you that the computer is running really good so far. I'm still skeptical but so far so good. I'm almost happy but am afraid of being disappointed. Lets see what happens so stay tuned.

On another note id like to let all the members going through this time consuming, disappointing, aggravating, non disclosing and whatever else you or I can think of time, not forget and donate to the AMERICA RED CROSS for the HAITI EARTHQUAKE RELIEF through itunes or directly through the AMERICAN RED CROSS website.

As we sit here with these problematic computers and list our aggravations these people are sleeping amongst their dead family members and no shelter or food. Every little bit helps and I thank you for your time. At times I must pinch myself and say i'm blessed regardless of whats going on in my life.

    Thanks, Rick..

I've been following this thread for a long time hoping to gain clarity about my new iMac apprehension; needless to say, i feel that I've been taking three steps back for every one forward. I'm running an old Emac G4 that is 6 years old and can barely keep up anymore with simple things like burning discs, internet video, large Photoshop workloads (I am still using the first CS!)and etc...

I came into some money in December and had the window (which may not come again for a long long time) to upgrade to something new. I planned on future-proofing as much as possible and going with the i7 2x4gb 2TB system, but as i read the horror stories and let time pass, money is no longer so abundant. I'm an artist and make use of Photoshop, aperture and various other programs (i don't really use Final cut or any other 'big' programs like that anymore) and speed is important. Due to my worries with all these screen issues (and my dwindling savings) i have been considering going with a C2D 27in. system... or maybe an i5.

I wanted to give my background info so i could get advice pertaining to my specific situation. Obviously i am running a very outdated machine, so the upgrade to the C2D would still be huge to me (even at 4GB ram i assume?) i'm just concerned with it getting really outdated fast. By that i mean, reaching the point my Emac is at right now...barely functional. I would like to get a good 6 years or more out of the new machine i buy, so any advice would be great.

Also, one of the reasons i considered the C2D is because it seems to be having less problems. The C2D has only come into my reality due to it being a little cheaper and seeming to have a better chance of not being defective.
I'm sorry if this is a long and unorganized post but it's the culmination months worth of questions swirling around in my head after reading and researching new Imacs. Any advice would be wonderful, i've fallen a bit out of the new tech. loop since being chained to this sinking ship for so long.

Bottom line: I don't have necessarily have such high standards as most of you for the top fastest machine but i need it to last me for a long time, like this one has.

    MAHALO!

I went from a dual processor G4 to a Core 2 Duo iMac. Like you, I use Adobe CS and miscellaneous other graphics programs and found a quantum leap in performance and the Core2Duo takes it all in it's stride. I don't doubt that an i5 or i7 would be even more impressive but the Core 2 copes easily. With an eye to the future, if you can stretch to the i5 it would be worth it.
One thing I've read on these forums is that if you are using the earliest version of CS you may have problems running it on an Intel Mac. My version of CS has InDesign 3.0.1, Photoshop 8.0 & Illustrator 11.0 and they all work fine, anything earlier may give you problems - worth checking first.
Finally, the Core2's are not without their problems - I had the dreaded flickers but have had the iMac repaired and it now seems to be OK.

Well, if everyone reads all the posts you will see that after 12 days of use I posted that I had no real problems with my replacement unit but after posting this I saw my first flicker. So with 5 dead iSight pixels and something between the glass and screen and the flickers starting I have decided to return my unit for a refund and wait and see if Apple resolves this.

This truly saddens me because I love this machine but I can't keep spending time in the hopes of receiving a unit without problems when Apple has not even acknowledged the problem or a resolution.

Apple, if you identify this problem and announce that it has been resolved then I will be back.

    My new iMac arrived today.

It seems perfectly okay. Right now I am cloning the former one to the new one and then we'll see. I am quite nervous but maybe this time a little luck?

Go the the Apple Menu>About This Mac. The week number is the fourth & fifth digits. In my case the serial number is: W8943xxxxxx with 43 being week 43, 2009.

    I´m saying it again.

I have been running the screen as "Apple RGB" for three days now. Not a flick, not a blackout.

Isn´t that weird (or maybe good)?

My machine is a week 43 build. Running all the latest of updates.
