Q: New iMac 27inch screen flickering/tearing/shutoff

I have been experiencing some problems with the all new iMac 27inch display.
At non-fixed intervals i will get one of the following:

Screen distortion/flicker somewhere random in the screen (feels like it is more in the lower part) that looks like a horizontal bar of about 2-3inches just popping in and out of the screen.

Screen will go completely black for a second and then come back on. Sometimes 2-3 times in a row.

Somebody else already made some video-clips about these problems, I am experiencing exactly the same behaviour.

Just to not that in the course of writing this post my screen has flickered 13 times and has gone black 2 times.

No, I have not returned to the "iMac" settings yet. Trying the "Apple RGB" for a while, waiting for som revolutionary things from Apple. I´m also waiting feedback from my support contact. But as far as I know and this tread is at proof of that, Apple does not have a solution.

As a company it´s quit cool to don´t say a thing and mayby just deliver a software update that solves it all. I mean thats credit, without saying a thing at first. The PR-guys att Apple is probobly good.

That doesn´t give any "bandage" to us having problem but, I still belive that a solution is on the way.

Jeez, now I'm in a dilemma.
With only 5 days left of my 'returns/remorse' period (where I can legally demand a refund/replacement), my iMac has suddenly stopped flickering!!
    Now what do I do?!!
Is it a keeper? Or is there a strong likelihood that the flicker will 'conveniently' return when my 5 days is up??!! (ie: Sod's law!)

It's been free from flickers for 2 whole days now. I haven't done anything to it - (apart from changing my background desktop picture to the 'rippled water' image). It normally flickers on start up, or when I wake it from a long sleep... that's no longer happening. (???!)

Has anyone else experienced a flicker-free period of 2 days or more - only to see it happen again days later??

I'd really appreciate any replies to this posting as I need to make a decision fairly pronto!!

    Thanks guys.

(By the way, I've identified that mine is a Week 52 model).

Before I had mine fixed I would get the very occasional 2 or 3 days of flicker-free use. For me, it always came back. It's tempting to hope it's gone away but I suspect it's still lurking!

If you planned to swap it because it flickered, do not change your mind because it doesn't do that anymore for 2 days. The flickering will come back for sure.
So either change it, or wait for an effective repair option (as I do, because you never know how many times you'll have to go back to swap again after a first time).
    Good luck!

I agree with the above two posts - mine would quite often go 2 or even 3 days without flickering, but it always came back, seemingly at random. Send it back.

My replacement arrived today. No flickering so far, not that that means much as it's only been hours - I'll update at the weekend.

If this one's knackered as well I'm going to demand a macbook pro as a replacement. Equivalent cost so they ought to do it. Though a part of me suspects that they'll refuse and it'll get messy...

Many thanks for all your comments Guys - really appreciate it.

Well, after careful consideration I've come to my decision:
My Mac's going back and I'll opt for a full refund.

I've given this some serious thought - and at £1600 this is one of the most expensive purchases I've ever made - and I expect to be nothing less than 100% satisfied with my purchase.
I also don't want to be lumbered with the possibility that (after my 14 day cooling off period) my machine will have to go back and forth time after time to my local Apple store for repairs... causing me much aggravation and regret.

It's going to be a bit of a wrench - apart from the occasional flickering/split screen issue, I've grown very fond of this baby over the last 9 days!
However, I'll be watching this forum avidly over the next few weeks/months - and once I'm assured that all is well in Apple's world, I'll order again.... (probably!)

Again, thanks for your help fellas...

And a message to Apple: pull your socks up!! This issue is causing a lot of damage to your once impeccable reputation... Show some integrity, hold your hands up, admit you made a boo-boo and issue a press release.

    You know it makes sense...

The answer is Yes. My initial flickering did not start until after 5 days. After that it would Flicker ever 2 days.

That makes 2-Week 03 in a row that are in good shape.

    Hi Dino, Hi pazuita,

Rick Lang and tallturtle gave us some hope, that the newest iMacs could be perfect. Week-03 could be the first week without negative reports. Fingers crossed for that and of course fingers crossed for Dinos second machine. Good Luck my friend!

citrus101, Yea maybe there IS a light at the end of this tunnel. I get mine Tuesday at like 4PM. I'm excited & worried! I'm sure mine will be a Week from last year since it's not from Apple & from a retailer. And of course I been checking there stock for a week, hoping at some point they'd go out of stock & then have to reorder. If I'm correct in my prediction, I think they got these Dec 20th, which means, I would get a November or Dec. Week. I had a 45. So we shall see. Thanks for the luck citrus. I NEED it! I don't want to go on this roller coaster again.

Thanks for the input. i have another question regarding the RAM in the i7: If i buy the 4GB 2x2gb..can i later upgrade with 2x4gb...resulting in 12gb total ram?

i have been getting by with my 80gb hd paired with an external lacie 150gb HD.. so i am assuming getting the 2TB HD would be a little overkill?

You are right, this question belongs in the "Expanding your iMac" section. But yes, you can expand the memory to a total of 12 GB (that's plenty, even 8 is great). If you can afford the 2 TB disk, it may be worthwhile even if it takes ten years to fill it up. In just a few years 2 TB may seem like a small disk. If you go with the 1 TB disk you may be fine and you can always supplement it with a 1 TB external disk later.

+"The same issues have not been reported with the 21.5-inch models."+

I guess the Apple insider can't Read! I must have posted my 21.5" specs & issues in this and 3 other Threads on here at least 100 times. Why can't people do research before writing an article? They continually leave out the 21.5.

Ye,a no problems with the 21.5 NVidia model except for Flicker,, Yellow, Screen Noise, Loud Hard Drive & Fans, Dead Pixels, Superdrive Scratches Disc, etc...

    Idiots!

"I must have posted my 21.5" specs & issues in this and 3 other Threads on here at least 100 times."

That's just in the last twenty or so pages. (snicker)

I didn't think it would take you long to post on that article, obviously the writer didn't do a lot of research before writing it.
I still think your chances of getting a good one with your first replacement are pretty good, even though you are going through a reseller. If you check the link again.....

    http://imac.squeaked.com/results.php?func=b&id=flickering

It still only shows 7 of the 21.5"ers with the flickering issue. That machine was the best selling desktop in the US in October. The 27's weren't available yet, and probably took the lead in November, and December. That compares to 658 of the 27's with the issue.

I would call that pretty good odds.
