Q: New iMac 27inch screen flickering/tearing/shutoff

I have been experiencing some problems with the all new iMac 27inch display.
At non-fixed intervals i will get one of the following:

Screen distortion/flicker somewhere random in the screen (feels like it is more in the lower part) that looks like a horizontal bar of about 2-3inches just popping in and out of the screen.

Screen will go completely black for a second and then come back on. Sometimes 2-3 times in a row.

Somebody else already made some video-clips about these problems, I am experiencing exactly the same behaviour.

Just to not that in the course of writing this post my screen has flickered 13 times and has gone black 2 times.

Megallis....you are not the first who has commented on the LG displays, and the likelihood that their "quality" or lack thereof is a major contributor to the problem.

Several have stated on this forum that LG is the manufacturer of these displays, although I have not seen anything outside of the blogs that would confirm that. All that I can see is that the displays that Apple has been using for at least the last four years still carries the same manufacturer number.

If, after years of reliability, the same manufacturer is now providing defective products, there has to have been a change somewhere.

Dino....."Thanks for trying to make me feel positive & happy"

You know that I have tried to keep things on this thread positive, even though you guys don't make it easy sometimes.

I just finished up the paperwork on my replacement, should get a shipping date within the next day or two. I'll be keeping this one till the new one arrives, so I am not in any rush.

The rep did say that new orders are still shipping within 7 to 10 days. That does seem to conflict with all of the reports of delays. He also said that they are receiving fewer calls on the flickering issue in the newer models, even though, at his level, they are not very well informed as to the cause, or solution to the issue. Engineers do not talk to reps.

He did concede that there is still a possibility of receiving a defective unit, but whatever it takes, Apple will make it good.

And he refused to answer any of my questions about the iTablet.

Yes you did try & keep it positive, even with all our whining. Someone had to keep it positive in this thread being almost the entire thread is filled with negative experiences. I know all will be good in the end. This is more of an inconvenience than anything.

Check you Out! Enquiring about the iTablet/iSlate. Did you really expect him to tell you ANYTHING? Most of those calls are monitored, as you well know. But you gave it the old College Try anyway.

Good luck with your replacement iMac. With all the work you've done for this thread, you surely deserve a perfect iMac.

Well this is my first post here and I am a new convert to Apple. on December 28th we purchased a MacBook Pro and the 27" iMac. From day one I have had issues with the iMac and am now on my third system. Each return requires a two hour round-trip and countless time preparing the old system for return and setting up the new system. AppleCare has tried to help, but they won't admit they have a widespread problem...they still try to go through possible software issues. I will be headed back to the store in the next day or so...haven't decided if I am exchanging or returning. I am pretty torn, but now that I hear there is a three week delay on delivery, that makes me feel as though I should just return it and chalk it up to a learning experience. I find it funny and a bit ironic that I decided to convert from PC to Apple due to reliability issues and now I find myself having to make this decision again.....

Yes shure. That can so be about the "LG" screens. I´ve heard that LG doesn´t make any screens by them self. But that just what I´ve heard. I don´t believe in them but, if the same manufacture has ben delivering for several years, yes something has happen. Probably a money issue

    Interesting article!
Not sure if this is related to the problem but I guess it has something to do with it:
    http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/01/20/wintek_apple/
    http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/china/2010-01/18/content_9332793.htm

They keep on using toxic chemicals for the hardware. I wonder if Apple really has gone "green" or that is just marketing strategy.

This is my first post after monitoring this site for some time. I have been listening to some of the suggestions that may help the flickering screen issue. Lately the ripping, tearing, blackout, whatevers have started. It only happens about 1 to 2 hours after the first start up of the day, then after a restart, no more. I have been able to almost always get it to do this by opening the "mac tips" widget which brings up an "adobe flash player security" box that just spins and I have to shut down to get rid of it. This speeds up the rate of heating on the CPU and graphics card, and around 63C graphics and 74C CPU everything starts freaking out. Now, today I put the display setting in Apple RGB mode, like some have suggested, and nothing. For the past week I have been able to create the above situation, but not with the RGB setting...interesting. I'll post again in a day or so, or sooner if things change, but others may want to try this that have a more extreme condition and see if it helps.

    Thanks

    Interesting article, thanks fa_design.

Although the article does say that the protests, and strikes are at a plant that produces touchscreens, one can't help but wonder........

As to the question of Apple going green, there is a link at the bottom of that article that seems to answer that question as well......They are obviously going green, but may not be as green as we thought.....also a mention of LG in the same article.....

Blimey, I hope so - that would be eight months since the current model was launched. It'll be getting close to the next model by then!

    Hi jobu338,

could you please inform us about the quality of the RGB mode? Is there big difference compared to the standard mode or does quality remain the same?

    Hey guys, 1st post here.
    A quick history :
bought my 27 i7 on October
    Received it late November
    Sent it back in December
Receive my 1st replacement on December
Sent it back again early January

My third i7 was suppose to ship yesterday. But now it has been delayed to early February.

I do not know if it is a good thing or not. I am thinking of having a refund atm simply because I do not trust this product anymore.

Any thought about this new delay ?

I've just switched to RGB to test it and unless you're doing colour critical work you'd do well to spot the difference. Can't believe it's a cure, but if it is I could live with it.

After a day of looking at the RGB, I kind of like it better, probably adjusted to it. When I switched, it seemed to get a bit darker, but I think it is just a bit more contrast between colors, the blacks are a bit more pronounced. After looking at it for 5 min, you wouldn't be able to tell that it switched. That is the only difference I've noticed. I ran a video on full screen and switched back and forth, but didn't see any difference in the quality. If anybody knows more, I'd love to hear it.
