Q: New iMac 27inch screen flickering/tearing/shutoff

I have been experiencing some problems with the all new iMac 27inch display.
At non-fixed intervals i will get one of the following:

Screen distortion/flicker somewhere random in the screen (feels like it is more in the lower part) that looks like a horizontal bar of about 2-3inches just popping in and out of the screen.

Screen will go completely black for a second and then come back on. Sometimes 2-3 times in a row.

Somebody else already made some video-clips about these problems, I am experiencing exactly the same behaviour.

Just to not that in the course of writing this post my screen has flickered 13 times and has gone black 2 times.

One thing I found strange is all my Updates were Downloaded & all I had to do was Install them. Odd! I hope this isn't someone's return. It was sealed perfectly. MMmmm???

Dino.........Hope you are wrong about that.......It has been suggested on this thread several times, that some resellers may be returning defective units to the shelf with the belief that there is nothing wrong with them.

If they don't see the flicker, then it isn't there.

When I unbox my new computers, I always save even the clear plastic over the display, and the foam wrapping. Everything goes back exactly the way I received it. The only difference is one extra layer of strapping tape on the top of the box, hardly noticeable.

    Good Luck with this one.

BTW.......You have posted waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more than 200 times here.

That is only on this thread and does not include 278 postings on other topics, or related threads.

In all fairness, my own postings have numbered over a hundred.

I brought an Imac 27 i7 8gb, week 53 and guess what....it flicked within 1 week. Tried to make my self believe that it wasn't yellow. But then my wife asked why the white background in my pictures were yellow(i'm a photographer),I gave up. Will wait a couple months and read the foruns to try another one eventually. What i really didn't like was the attitude of the guy at the genius bar. He turned on the imac and said.."i don't see any flickering or yellow tinge", do you? After that i just asked my money back, and shoved his sarcasm.

Ok, another update, my replacement is another DOA.
They will ring me with week numbers and ask me to choose one.
I told them it might take awhile.

Are there any solutions for these problems, other than just replace the mac?

    More craziness:

Yesterday I received a call from Apple, telling me there was a 2 week delay on delivery. I persuaded them to give me an additional discount (on top of the 100 Euros compensation I already had).
Later that evening I checked my Applestore account, and it showed me a delay of 3 weeks, not 2 weeks. Wrote an email asking (somewhat sarcastic) "2 weeks ... 3 weeks ... which is it?". No reply.

This morning I got an email from the Applestore, telling me my order has been shipped.

Happy to report that so far my replacement i5 (4th machine now) is going strong after 2 days - no flickering, no eating discs. I do have a couple of dead pixels in the isight, but I can live with that for now. I'll probably get that taken care of in the future with a repair. I'll update if the flickering happens in the future.

After the somewhat unsatisfactory conversation with the Apple Care rep, I went to an Apple Retail Store today and the Apple Genius only had to glimpse at my flickering iMac screen for two seconds, before he replaced my three month old 27-inch iMac with a brand new iMac that was built 2nd week of January. Apparently, they "usually" don't do exchanges for devices that were purchased more than two weeks ago, but he made an "exception." He did ask me, though, if I had purchased the iMac at an Apple retail store or online. (I bought it at an Apple Retail Store)

So far, so good. Haven't noticed any flickering, nor yellow tinge, but I'm still transferring my data from my backup disk. Will keep you guys posted.
