Q: New iMac 27inch screen flickering/tearing/shutoff

I have been experiencing some problems with the all new iMac 27inch display.
At non-fixed intervals i will get one of the following:

Screen distortion/flicker somewhere random in the screen (feels like it is more in the lower part) that looks like a horizontal bar of about 2-3inches just popping in and out of the screen.

Screen will go completely black for a second and then come back on. Sometimes 2-3 times in a row.

Somebody else already made some video-clips about these problems, I am experiencing exactly the same behaviour.

Just to not that in the course of writing this post my screen has flickered 13 times and has gone black 2 times.

Eric, it's been mentioned a couple dozen times in this thread. Thanks.

Read through the posts and you will see that it has been tried but hasn't worked for most. My week 53 replacement came with the firmware patch pre-preinstalled and it still flickered. I definitely think the problem is hardware.

Of course everyone here is angry. But Apple were not going to mention a Negative at an Announcement for a new product. I think we all knew they weren't going to say anything. Since they have not said anything any where else, including on this Forum.

As I mentioned back on page 93, I'm still waiting for this to be solved before buying one. So are many, many others. I'm astounded that after all this time we still have no real solution. It's frustrating and a true shame.

I am still pending another imac now that i have my money back maybe in a few months. What I still can't understand is people are still receiving failed units whether they are yellow, flickering of smashed. I currently work in IT an we spend month testing, so how on earth are people still receiving bad or failed yellowing units, what standards are Apple adhering too right now? Surely they know about this and test a batch of 1000 iMacs of a few weeks before allowing them to leave, or are they so cheap to mac they can afford the failure rate and still make a profit.

I will have a look in APRIL and see if it's fixed...

Currently have three systems in the Apple Service Center for video problems. Two with the displaced video and one with the flickering and blacking out issue. The flicker system was nice enough to do it when the Apple service representative was here picking up the other two! Not a very good record having three out of twenty-four systems all go back to repair within two weeks of being installed. I also got an e-mail that the next eight I have on order will have their delivery delayed for about another week (second delay). All of these are 27" IMacs.

Whoever at Apple made the decision to accept this system, with all its display problems, and put it into production and sale must be very handsomely rewarded by Microsoft!

So this means you had a order of 27" with near 19% of units faulty...
I'm a potential iMac i7 buyer (first mac for me) and i have no words about that.

Really...go through the hassle of a repair for a couple of dead pixels in your iSight camera. I suppose to each their own, but it seems a bit much.

Don't know if I would say no solution. Just in reading this forum, I get the sense that Apple is making progress, seems like people who are getting machines produced later on are not complaining with near the frequency as earlier in the thread.

I'm guessing I'll be picking one up in February...

Don't know if this has been posted yet.

New fix in a few weeks perhaps?

Still don't understand why the media never report about problems in the 21.5 imac, perhaps sales are lower. The screen problems in the 21.5 imac I had were certainly a lot worse than in the 27 one I have now. Half of the screen was almost completely yellow!

For the 2nd time in a row,  is putting out a Firmware Update for just the 27". What about a 1st fix for the 21" ? They are in complete denial. The 21" screen has flicker & yellow tinge & they refuse to provide even an attempt at a fix for these people. It's just boggles my mind, how they completely forgot about people who bought the smaller screen. Did we not spend enough money to be worthy of at least an attempted fix? I don't care if it's only 400 - 21" Screens that have Flicker. Humor us with some sort of an attempt. This makes me go freakin' mad! &^%$ *&^%

Andrew - each of those media reports are based off the AppleInsider story, which in turn was based off two (or three?) people on this thread who said their Apple technician promised that a new fix was coming out soon.

Not saying it's not going to happen, but I think random licensed technicians will say just about anything. I doubt Apple's communicating anything about this issue beyond their internal support DB, let alone promising fixes.
