Q: New iMac 27inch screen flickering/tearing/shutoff

I have been experiencing some problems with the all new iMac 27inch display.
At non-fixed intervals i will get one of the following:

Screen distortion/flicker somewhere random in the screen (feels like it is more in the lower part) that looks like a horizontal bar of about 2-3inches just popping in and out of the screen.

Screen will go completely black for a second and then come back on. Sometimes 2-3 times in a row.

Somebody else already made some video-clips about these problems, I am experiencing exactly the same behaviour.

Just to not that in the course of writing this post my screen has flickered 13 times and has gone black 2 times.

Sent back my flickering 27" iMac last week and ordered a replacement. Was told that I could expect my new model to be shipped around 12th Feb. Today, I received an email to say that my order has been shipped and I can expect to receive it around 5th Feb.
Now, instead of being excited and full of glee I'm actually a tad nervous about what I'm likely to receive. I thought that there was a 3 week delay to resolve the issues with the new iMacs before they are shipped?
As mine is now coming sooner than expected, I'm worried I'm going to receive another dud.
Fingers crossed that ain't gonna happen - but if that IS the case, I'm finished with Apple...

I have just one thing to note to who is questioning about trolls & etc..
I think there are a lot of people here (like me) following this thread for the only reason to get updated on the iMacs issues resolutions and/or reporting his story about this.
So, could you please stop to post useless (aka off-thread) messages?
Would be really great and time saving for who wants useful information.

    Thanks.

    I absolutely agree!!

Please, please, please keep your posting relevant to the issue. In case you forgot, we are trying to understand what is causing the "New iMac 27inch screen flickering/tearing/shutoff" problems. PERIOD!

I've been following this post for a while now (since early December but haven't posted anything yet). I called the apple store (1800myapple) and spoke with a representative and asked a few questions. I mentioned the 3 week ship time and delays people have been having and first mentioned the popularity and amounts of returns that need to be fulfilled due to the flickering screen. But he said it's been fixed with new parts and the delay is because of the parts availability as well. So it looks like I'll be ordering mine this weekend even though I'll get it toward the end of February.

Hello EdenOrchestra, Ettore dn and Ady-Baby,

I likewise agree, and I apologize for getting a little sidetracked at times. However, I could no longer ignore the fact that a few folks here have been rather heavy-handed in their comments in this thread, repeatedly trying to force their opinion on others -- to the point of accusing others -- so I had to speak up.

At the same time, while I truly understand why most of us have come to this thread -- myself included -- I think that perhaps some of us need a reality check.

What I mean by that is this: Since these issues first manifested themselves, Apple has had almost four months to enlighten us; yet to my knowledge, no authorized Apple employee has made a meaningful comment in this thread in that regard.

So without an official word from Apple, what are we left with? A group of frustrated but well-meaning people for the most part, who are throwing around theories, conjectures and speculations which cannot be substantiated.

In short, this thread is nothing more than a place to share stories and experiences, where we can vent our frustrations. This thread is not going to help us to understand what is causing the problems, because even after a personal invitation, Apple has refused to join us here, and they are the only ones who know the real answers . . . at least so we all hope.

    Hello everyone.

This is the first time I'm writing in this discussion. I have been following it since the first 20 pages. Got my i7 imac on Dec 3rd. Its a week 47.

After about a week I got the flicker and black out. After getting a case number, I brought it to an authorized apple repair center. I lucky to have stumbled upon a competent and nice fellow. After running many diagnostics and finding nothing wrong, Apple suggested to him to check were 2 v-cables and the screen itself. He replaced the first v-cable, no luck. The computer continued flickering. He proceeded to replace the second. If this doesn't work he will have to replace the screen.

It has now been exactly 2 weeks since the second cable was replaced and its been flicker FREE. I'm still not convinced the problem is solved from the posts I've been reading, but for now it seems fixed.

I hope this information can help anyone, that is why I decided to post. I will keep you updated if the problem returns.

I'm sure many are reading these posts but are not writing. That is why I decided to add my 2 cents and share my experience.

    Good luck to everyone.

The second Cable? Is it the screen to video card cable?

Yea SilviaRacer, Apple shows reaction, no doubt, but the informations we get are still contradicting. We heard that the new fix could be

    1) a second firmware update
    2) a hardware replacement
    3) nothing, because these problems are only our imaginations
    4) a replacement of the computer
    5) Mac OS X 10.6.3
    6) a trial software
    7) a cable
    ...

We have nothing than rumors and I wait and wait and wait for clear and ultimate answers!
Yea, only a fanboy can wait such a long time.

    Thanks for the info.

I'm also in Montreal, where did you bring your machine for repair?
My machine is also flickering but very rarely.
In fact, I have not seen a flicker for two weeks!
But when it does, it wont stop until I put the machine to sleep.

So in my case the problem is rare but I know it's there and I want it fixed!

Sparkie..........."I believe dino is pointing to the fact that pazuita was accusing him amonst others including me of being said trolls."

Please refer me to the posting where I referred to either you or Dino as trolls?

I think you will have more than a little difficulty doing so since it has not happened. Please try to be accurate with your posts.

I believe what Dino was referring to was the fact that he, along with several others, was accused of being a MS troll, not by me, but the accusations were made unfairly.

Guys, I was only have serious in my statement. I do not think Pazuita considers me a Troll since I was one of the first ones here & he knows better. And I think it's quite obvious to anyone reading my posts that my posts have all been legitimate. You guys need to stop arguing about this. It makes no sense. If we're going to go off topic, lets do it in a fun way. Not all these accusations & debates. We are all in the same boat. Let's try & be kind & civil to one another. There was only one person on her that I considered a Troll & it was someone who kept on Laughing in our faces, that he had a perfect iMac. So let's lighten up about all this. Come On Guys, Let it rest & let's go back on topic. You guys & this post have made me feel like I wasn't alone & better about a negative situation. And I thank you for it.
