Q: New iMac 27inch screen flickering/tearing/shutoff

I have been experiencing some problems with the all new iMac 27inch display.
At non-fixed intervals i will get one of the following:

Screen distortion/flicker somewhere random in the screen (feels like it is more in the lower part) that looks like a horizontal bar of about 2-3inches just popping in and out of the screen.

Screen will go completely black for a second and then come back on. Sometimes 2-3 times in a row.

Somebody else already made some video-clips about these problems, I am experiencing exactly the same behaviour.

Just to not that in the course of writing this post my screen has flickered 13 times and has gone black 2 times.

    iMac 215" NVidia Week 51

    3Days =
    1. No Flicker
    2. Slight Color Conformity Issue on Far Right Side of Screen. But not noticable even on a White Screen. Only noticeable with Grey Bar Test.
    3. Hard Drive (Hitachi) makes Accessing Noise. In other words you can hear it accessing when Opening a Program. My old iMac Hard Drive (Seagate) was completely Silent all the time.

Dino......... I would think the fact that you have a machine with a Hitachi drive seems to back up what Apple has stated.

They claim that they are having some issues with acquiring enough 3.5" drives, and DRAM to keep up with demand, and have changed the original 7 to 10 day delivery times to 3 weeks.

So far we have seen at least three different HD's used in the new models, WD, Seagate, and now Hitachi, there may be others in use as well.

But you don't think because it makes an accessing Noise, that I should be worried?
Also, Is Hitachi a decent HD? I know I have a Hitachi in my TV. Thanks in advance!

    Hi Dino,

yellow tinge is there, it's not an illusion. I would not accept it. Did you asked Apple Support directly, if there is a fix or something like that?

I reported it. Got a Case Number. Sent the Senior Advisor the same photos via email. He told me he would swap it out, but I told him swapping it out for another with the same problem was not what I wanted. He also said they could Repair it, but I told him I was going to hold off until Apple had a definite solution. His title was "Senior Advisor". But he really did not leave me with the warm & fuzzy feeling I was looking for. He could not tell Guarantee me a perfect machine. I then asked if I could keep the machine but he was not quite sure if my Charge Card would be Charged once again, which I thought was strange. I don't need another charge on my Credit Card, that's for sure. So I'm waiting. He gave me all his info. Very professional but he never really sounded like, "Yes We Know What The Problem Is & It Is Fixed". So I will wait. Like I said, I don't even notice it. Just in the Grey Bar Test.

... and Dino did you see?

New on Apple Support page: "Speak to an Expert. Available in U.S. & Canada".

    You could try it out.

    Thanks for your post JC44.
I think it would be very useful if you could post the part numbers of the cable(s) that were replaced from your repair. Might help someone out.

Yea that is Cool! I will Check it out! I'm sorry guys to disappoint you all, but I'm loving this iMac. I just had my GF sit in my Chair to see anything & told her which side was Darker & she could not see it. I know that does not mean anything though. I will get it resolved, just not right now.

    -Update-

    i7 27" week 45

flickering screen returned Jan 28 after 33 days of absence.
    Previous occurrence : Dec 26!

Same pattern : 2 short flickers - lack of sync probably - then blackout 1 sec (panic mode).
Same cure : immediate display sleep&wake (1 sec too). Works fine since.

Machine under Apple care warranty but I will wait until I'm sure they have a real and long term fix.

Replacing LCD panel and V-sync cable while recruiting beta testers for a second software fix is making no sense, IMHO.

    Cheers.

None of it makes any sense. There is a ton of Misinformation going around. On this thread, In the Media, as well as in Apple Support. I can't see after making this type Model of iMac for so long, how Apple could not have figured out the Problem yet. No software/firmware update in 2-3 Weeks is going to help a Yellow screen. And IMO, if it stops Screen Flicker, it's like putting a band aid on a cut that needs stitches. Just my little Opinion. Of course I'm not an Engineer or an Apple Tech & I could be wrong.

    Jacques,

    Merci pour cette "update"

    Retour à l'anglais maintenant.

Wow! 33 days with out a flicker is a loooooong time!

    Thats not really good news

I mean the fact that it went on for so long with out flickering, is casting a shadow on the reports of fixed machines after replacing screen and cables.

Since none of those machines have been working for over a month yet.

I mean these fixed machines could also start flickering after over a month of good behavior like yours did.

I know yours did not get repaired, but the fact that it was fine for over a month, means that anyone with a new or repaired machine can not really relax before there machine as worked "flickers free" for more than a month

Theorically right. But hold on and think for a moment.. My personal opinion is that it's a hardware problem (eg v-synch cable and/or LCD panel).
Assume that it's right, Apple could have already indentified the faulty part (eg v-synch). So what can they do now?

    1. replace the part in all new units, call a lot of customers and say "hey take your iMac in a apple center and we replace the faulty part with a new one" => "Big" cost for them, excpecially for the LCD panel.

    2. replace the part in all new units, find a software/firmware workaround ("update") and let all users download it => cost near $0.

Think from a Apple (or any company) perspective. What would you do?

    Hello Nexus600

I brougt my mac to Royal Photo on Rosemont Avenue. Did not want to drive all the way downtown to Apples flagship store. Its not the first time I deal with them, and I was quite please of the service all the time. If you go there, he'll already know where to check since I was the first with this problem to go there.

As for the cables, not sure of the part number, but its already been mentionned in this forum on earlier pages and I believe are called v-cables ( which have somewhat to do with video). Will try next week to find out exactly which parts they are.

    Good luck.
