Q: New iMac 27inch screen flickering/tearing/shutoff

I have been experiencing some problems with the all new iMac 27inch display.
At non-fixed intervals i will get one of the following:

Screen distortion/flicker somewhere random in the screen (feels like it is more in the lower part) that looks like a horizontal bar of about 2-3inches just popping in and out of the screen.

Screen will go completely black for a second and then come back on. Sometimes 2-3 times in a row.

Somebody else already made some video-clips about these problems, I am experiencing exactly the same behaviour.

Just to not that in the course of writing this post my screen has flickered 13 times and has gone black 2 times.

In the words of that great seeker of truth, Fox Mulder, I would have to say "Trust no one".

There is so much disinformation going on right now, that until Apple reveals whatever it is going to reveal, we will all continue to remain in the dark.

Right now, my biggest personal dilemma is deciding what to do about this slight yellow tinge. I am thinking that I will wait to see what Apple has to offer -- if anything -- in a few weeks, and then I will decide whether or not I want to approach my AAR about this.

    Ok Nexus600,

I read your two posts at the same time.

I was thinking -for example- of the beautiful but expensive 24" HP DreamColor LP2480zx, that has a 30-bit LCD panel backlighted by tri-color RGB LEDs.

You have perfectly understood what I meant. The technology used in the iMac implies that 'if' the yellow tint issue is caused by a defect in the distance between the diffusion layer and the LCD panel, a hardware repair is due.

    Cheers.

The article on hardmac.com only talks about the i5 and i7 iMacs.
Not a word about the 27" C2D iMacs.
If Apple was to stop production, they would also stop the production of 27" C2Ds since the problems are also present in them.

Not to add fuel to the fire of them halting shipments but...

On January 31st my iMac shipment info was received.
On the 1st of Feb. it was picked up and left the FedEx facility.
At 9:10 PM (China Time) it was picked up AGAIN(?) but this time with a shipment exception.

So, I am not sure if it missed the plane or if Apple halted it before it could go.

That quad core Mac Pro is looking better and better...

    EDIT: I ordered a 27" core i5.

I got my imac core i7 back from repairs 4 days ago, with the note that the graphics card had been replaced.

i have only been using it rather lightly up until today, and didn't see any sign of the problem. now however, i used it for a longer period and watched video and other more graphics intensive tasks, and ofcourse, the flickering and blackouts are back

    it's rather disappointing.

    Petter,

this is exactly the reason I have not done anything about my imac....what a waste of time (and resources), to bring it in for a useless repair. I'm sorry that you did not get a repair that worked!

It's not worth doing anything until Apple makes a statement. In the meantime, all I can do is log all of the problems....

.....unfortunately as time passes, I find I can't help but to bottle up more resentment and anger. Which is, I suppose, one of the reasons why a lot of us are commiserating together on this forum.

Once again the Press & Publications, especially on the Internet, never ceases to amaze me. What a vague statement. What about the other 4 or 5 problems these iMacs have? And what about...Forget It It Won't Say It! I guess Size DOES Matter. If you don't buy a 27" Screen, you don't count.

Another 27-inch iMac Display Update is available via Software Update. Just popped up about 15 minutes ago.

    Thanks for the info!

I just applied the Update and all seems to be OK so far.
But my iMac as not flickered for the last 2 weeks so it doesn't mean much.

    We will see!

Hope it works for many of us if not all!

Yes, there is indeed new firmware - iMac Display Firmware.

Apply it. The flickering will go away.

To those of you who called me names and such after my original post - crow tastes better with a little salt.

What AppleCare told me was absolutely accurate. There was a fix in the works, and it took about 3 weeks to be released.

    Nothing more, nothing less.

Now, for those of you who have yellowing issues - that's a different problem altogether, I would surmise. But the flickering? It's GONE with this firmware update. Gone, gone, gone!

One other thing to note ...

This is a DISPLAY firmware update -- for the 27" display panel.

The previous update was for the VIDEO ADAPTER in the iMac.

These are different firmwares for different devices.
