Q: New iMac 27inch screen flickering/tearing/shutoff

I have been experiencing some problems with the all new iMac 27inch display.
At non-fixed intervals i will get one of the following:

Screen distortion/flicker somewhere random in the screen (feels like it is more in the lower part) that looks like a horizontal bar of about 2-3inches just popping in and out of the screen.

Screen will go completely black for a second and then come back on. Sometimes 2-3 times in a row.

Somebody else already made some video-clips about these problems, I am experiencing exactly the same behaviour.

Just to not that in the course of writing this post my screen has flickered 13 times and has gone black 2 times.

OK, I'll check in. I did the latest update with no obvious problems (got the momentary blackout during the install, I assumed that was a normal part of the process). That was last night and I've had no problems yet....though my flickering was so intermittent that I won't pass judgement for at least a couple weeks.

I have the yellowing problem, but it is very minor, very hard to see....and oddly enough, it was lessened after that security update we had a week or two ago. Go figure. I'll keep watching this thread for a while longer and write in when I am convinced my flickering is solved.

By now my iMac has not yet flickered.

My flickering issues were random and rare after the first firmware upgrade. I could stay weeks without problem. Currently, everything seems to be fine.
Yesterday I called Italy Apple Support to open a ticket for flickering stuff and they said me that a second and finally resolving updated was incoming. So, let's cross the fingers

    Hello,
I own a 27 inch i7 8G RAM from week 53. I have had the flickering problem from the start, and it was quite consistent in appearing every time the imac had been turned on for about an hour. I could then cure it by letting the display sleep for a few seconds. After the update, which I did earlier today, I have not seen any flicker. Must admit that I have pretty convinced from the start that this issue would be solved this way - Have experienced way more serious issues with some of the PCs I have built. This Imac really rocks - Just love the new OS. Have an 17 inch G5 which still runs great, but this I7 is just really fast

I applied the update yesterday. Since then, I haven't experienced any flickers, shutoffs or tear-offs. Anyways, I am keeping my fingers crossed for my beloved iMac. Hope the fix will be stable:-)))

My 27" iMac is about 3 weeks old and I experience some minor flickering here and there. Not as bad as others, but of course it still worries me immensely for the life of my brand new $2k computer.

I've called support and they offered me a replacement, but now that the production has stopped on the 27's I'm really curious as to what the future might hold.

One more time: According to The Wall Street Journal, Apple officially denies that production was ever halted on this product.

    Peace,

Also, in case you missed it, check your software update, there should be a new firmware update posted yesterday to resolve the flickering issue. Time will tell, but so far it has worked on mine. (note: it will do a couple of blackouts during installation) I would do this first before getting a replacement

Production never stopped, that was only an rumor.
An update is now available that seems to have fixed the flickering problem.

I'm glad you guys found a Solution.

    I started a 21.5" Thread.

    FYI: READ THIS!
Ok. Yesterday, I sent a long winded email about my iMac situation to Mr. Steve Jobs. I mentioned this Forum & all the problems all of us with the 21.5" are experiencing. I asked him why nothing was being done as far as an Update, to fix the 21.5" iMac. And why all attention is paid only to the 27" iMac. I just got home 15 minutes ago & there was a message from a woman rep, who said she was calling about my email to Steve Jobs. She left a name & number. I called her back, but got her Voice Mail & left a message. I'm sure she will call me back tonight or tomorrow.

Ahh, they missed the iMac 21.5" issues cause they are spending too much time playing Need For Speed Shift and reading books with their brand new iPad =))

the firmware seems to have stopped my flickering as well, but I haven't seen it flicker for a couple days prior to the update so only time will tell. Unfortunately, my screen has very bad backlight bleeding in the bottom right corner and I'm going to have to take it in anyway, unless apple finds a way to correct hardware errors with another firmware lol. Somehow I don't think this new firmware will solve anything, but what do I know...

I think now it is safe to buy the new iMacs 27' and don't receive one that flickers! I am following this thread for more than a month and I really want to buy a i7 but I've been waiting for a fix to this problems since december. I live in Brazil and they ship it in 5 to 7 weeks!

    I'm just curious: what's Steve's email?

    Best regards!

I would see also the yellow tinge problem solved also cause this one seems hard to fix by software update.

    Me too.

So has Apple said what these firmware is doing? I suspect a dumbing down of the graphics chip to reduce heat. I would guess the firmware would just be a recalibration of the core clock and such. I over clock a lot of computers and this is a heat issue. The only way to solve it is to slow it down. But if damage is done then this will not be a fix.
