Q: New iMac 27inch screen flickering/tearing/shutoff

I have been experiencing some problems with the all new iMac 27inch display.
At non-fixed intervals i will get one of the following:

Screen distortion/flicker somewhere random in the screen (feels like it is more in the lower part) that looks like a horizontal bar of about 2-3inches just popping in and out of the screen.

Screen will go completely black for a second and then come back on. Sometimes 2-3 times in a row.

Somebody else already made some video-clips about these problems, I am experiencing exactly the same behaviour.

Just to not that in the course of writing this post my screen has flickered 13 times and has gone black 2 times.

I would see also the yellow tinge problem solved also cause this one seems hard to fix by software update.

    Agreed.

citrus, I not only am on that Yellow Tinge Thread but I started a New iMac 21.5" thread with all Issues. Too many people with 21.5" Screens are being Overlooked.

I emailed Steve Jobs yesterday & I got a call from his office, saying on my Voice Mail. This is in reference to your iMac & the email you sent Steve Jobs. No kidding!

No kidding, he has a staff that checks his email for issues that involve support that need to be addressed.

I don't think anyone believes he personally checks those messages. They are filtered by a staff as to the appropriate destination or lack thereof and a few do reach him directly. But that's a rarity.

    Peace,
    Gene

If i remember right, as stated by Jacques LAPORTE the heat doesn't affect the issues. He tested the iMac on both cold and warm environments and didn't notice any difference.

My thought is they first changed the frame rate and after the "refresh rate" (backlight frequency) of the LCD.
Anyway it's hard to know what they changed. Just thoughts... for now.

On my second imac! I waited four weeks for the second unit and it flickered just after start up. I have the latest updates, but does not help. Not sure when and how this will end.

Received my second imac yesterday after waiting for four weeks. Unfortunately it is flickering already. Not sure what the latest info from Apple is; need to look into it now. We are running the latest firmware update. If the mac pro was not significantly more I would upgrade to rid the issue, so I can get back to work. Bummer!

I had my flicker issue solved by the vsync cable/LCD replacement. I did install the display firmware update yesterday, but after the system restarted and I logged back in I had one strange thing happen: I could suddenly hear one of the fans becoming fairly loud. iStat Pro showed the CPU fan going over 1600 RPM, where it normally sits around 940 or so. The CPU temp was normal, around 114F, while this was happening. This happened only once. I didn't write down the other temps but they didn't strike me as being abnormally high at the time.

I have no idea how or if this relates to the flicker issues, but I thought I would pass it on as another data point. Aside from that one incident the system has been working flawlessly, as it has been since the repair.

Agreed. It's really hard that he takes care of emails sent to him.
To be honest, if they really, really and really would take care of customers then they would have published an official note about these issues. Something like "We know your problems with our new and expensive iMacs line. We are already working on that, don't worry" and not fall from clouds after 2 months and discover that also the iMac 21" are affected... (based on what a user reported here from a call with AppleCare).

So it seems you are the third here with latest firmware updates and without flicker solved.

3 no go's after the last update is a good enough score for me.
Those machines probably have a bigger problem like defective hardware.

I still think that the latest update as solved the flickering problem.

I think, Apple finally found the fix. We should close this thread and transfer our discussions to the yellow tinge thread.

Dino, pazuita, Warren, sparkie from laaandaaan, Nexus600, Rick Lang, Brian_1338, skullcat, Jacques, tallturtle, p.hugo, Sierputowski, Christine, Dennis, Ettore, ... what are you thinking?

    Citrus,

I don't wish to dampen anyone's enthusiasm, but I am thinking that considering what we already know about these problems, that is, how random and sporadic they can be, it is way too early to be shouting "Victory, victory!". My gosh . . . some of you are shouting "Cure found, case closed!" barely an hour after installing the second update. In this case, I think it is healthy to remain skeptical for the time being. If folks here are still declaring victory at least a few weeks from now, then I will be more inclined to agree that this second update has indeed resolved the flickering issue.

But then there is the yellow tinge . . .

BTW, I still haven't installed the second update, because I see no need to. My i7 iMac hasn't flickered yet in the 13 days that it's been in my possession.

I have to agree with you Warren. That Flicker can come back in a week or two. Don't count your Chickens before they Hatch! I'm usually not a pessimist, but the way things are going, I would need at least 3 weeks of being Flicker Free. Just my little opinion.

I agree with You Dino and Warren as well but only to a point.

I mean think of the fiasco of the first update.
MINUTES after that one came out we had report of its failure.
People were screaming that it did not work or even made things worse.

One as to admit that the aftermath of this update is much better and looks much more positive.

    Lets be positive for now!
Let the bells ring and the birds sing! It works! the update works!!!

    I hope
