Q: New iMac 27inch screen flickering/tearing/shutoff

I have been experiencing some problems with the all new iMac 27inch display.
At non-fixed intervals i will get one of the following:

Screen distortion/flicker somewhere random in the screen (feels like it is more in the lower part) that looks like a horizontal bar of about 2-3inches just popping in and out of the screen.

Screen will go completely black for a second and then come back on. Sometimes 2-3 times in a row.

Somebody else already made some video-clips about these problems, I am experiencing exactly the same behaviour.

Just to not that in the course of writing this post my screen has flickered 13 times and has gone black 2 times.

This is the same problem i have with my macbook Pro 15. it started doing this about a month ago around the update..
i brought in the pro to the apple store but they could not reproduce the event...
I think it may be a software issue.

Mert, thanks for your answer. You are right, my post should have posted in the other thread - I am sorry for that.
It seems that you do not have the problem because I could very easily spot the difference between the top and lower part of the screen. So luckily, there seem to be good screens out there. Maybe I should order once again and give Apple another chance to prove that they are the best gadget brand out there

Like you, i had that problem on my second mac. Since i'm a graphic designer it was also useless to me. Because the colors wheren't correct in that region (from bottomright to middle right). --> that kind of bleeding is 9/10 a assambling-error, something is a bit loose. They've changed mine without even asking me to test it.

    Good luck

    So far it looks like...

    c2d iMacs
    939: flickering issue
941: flickering issue (though, "old john" claims no problems yet)
    947: no flicker

    i7 iMacs
945: no flicker (but reported yellow "sandrotto")
    946: no flicker
    947: no flicker

Anyone want to add, or correct this list?

    Scratch w946 from the list.

Mine flickers, although it does not seem to be as frequent as some.

It also drops the menu bar to the middle of the screen requiring a restart to clear.

I guess I should add that this seems to affect a very small percentage of the i7's.

Thousands have been shipped, and so far, I have only seen about forty, or fifty different posters claim to have a problem. That's a pretty small number.

Although I haven't taken the steps yet to have mine replaced, From all of the posts I have seen, Apple is very quick to offer a replacement.

Best warranties and service on the planet, even if they are slow to admit a problem. You can't do better than a "no questions asked" replacement.

And please ignore the blue trolls. Even with the flickering issue, I still prefer this iMac i7 over any pc I have ever owned or used.

945 i7 here. It did the screen flicker with bands at he top/bottom about 10-15 times when I first switched it on out of the box. And it blacked out for a split second twice. I assumed it was just adjusting itself initially somehow. I took the 3 suggested auto updates (iTunes and another couple of application updates I think but not OS updates or hardware) and rebooted and it hasn't done it since. Then I read this thread and watched the videos (very upset by it). Been using it for four days now. Not sure whether or not to call up for a replacement. I wish Apple would tell us if is't hardware of software. Does anyone know for sure? .... Anyone? I'm quaking in my boots waiting for it to happen again if it is hardware.

I have a question... my previous replacements required very large updates (10.6.2 - almost 490MB) HOWEVER - The i5 I am typing this on (my last replacement) had 10.6.2 PRELOADED! So... a poll...
HOW MANY PEOPLE HAD 10.6.2 PRELOADED or DID YOU HAVE TO DO THE UPDATE YOURSELF?
As of Thursday since i unpacked this new i5 - NO ISSUES YET.

Is there any consensus on the most likely way to make it flicker/blackout/tear?
I want to beat on my 2-day old i7 (week 47 ) before doing any data migration.
So far I have not seen it happen (there goes the jinxs).

That would imply the i7 never had an issue and what about the i5?

My i5 (946) flickered, it also cam pre loaded with 10.6.2

My i7 came pre-loaded 10.6.2. As I said in my previous post I got the problem initially and it went away after the first reboot.

Your computer is clearly defective. Why in the world would you silently suffer with a defective computer? Return it for a replacement.

    Hello from Italy!

My 3,06 C2D iMac suffers of flickering.
I use the iMac at work and it blinks generally 5 or 6 times a day. It's a kind of monitor refresh with a black line in center of the screen. It lasts for 1 second or less.
It is not annoying at all, but it is clear that something is wrong with the pc.

Also once the imac is in sleep mode the "air mouse" (or whatever name that mouse has) isn't able to wake it up. I have to push any cap on the keyboard and HOPE the imac finds the mouse.
Otherwise I have to reboot the sysem. It happens 50% of the time because bluetooth device fails the connection to the mouse.

Last -finally- my cap lock button has the green led broken.
