Q: New iMac 27inch screen flickering/tearing/shutoff

I have been experiencing some problems with the all new iMac 27inch display.
At non-fixed intervals i will get one of the following:

Screen distortion/flicker somewhere random in the screen (feels like it is more in the lower part) that looks like a horizontal bar of about 2-3inches just popping in and out of the screen.

Screen will go completely black for a second and then come back on. Sometimes 2-3 times in a row.

Somebody else already made some video-clips about these problems, I am experiencing exactly the same behaviour.

Just to not that in the course of writing this post my screen has flickered 13 times and has gone black 2 times.

27" i7 W8947 Has the same flickering and tearing.

    Here is my proof:

Freeze frames have been added to make the tearing easier to see.

Just to update I still haven't had any problems with my imac (fingers crossed, knock on wood). I'm still following this thread because I want to know why some are having these problems and others aren't. Today I did some work in Corel Painter and had to install rosetta to do so...I was a little concerned about installing anything really because its still unknown if this is a software issue (which doesn't seem like the popular opinion). I had no problems after the install which I'm happy about obviously but like I said, If this turns out to be a batch issue I might be tempted to exchange my system whether or not it exhibits any symptoms...I don't want a ticking time bomb so hopefully we'll have some answers by time our 14 days expire...which BTW has been extended into January for those of us who bought our systems after October 30th I believe.

Even Apple doesn't have those statistics yet.

The fact that thousands of these machines have been sold, and are in use, is proof enough that this is not a problem that affects even a substantial portion of the machines that have been marketed so far.

These forums draw owners who have a particular problem, and go looking for answers. So far, there are very few forums dealing with this problem, and only a handful of posters claiming to have a machine with this specific problem. There are almost an equal number posting here who have either experienced very minor problems, or no problems at all.

Since owners who have no problems have no reason to go searching these forums, they are effectively left out of the discussion.

That indicates a small percentage of machines actually suffer this problem.

Even though this problem only seems to affect a very small portion of the machines Apple has produced, and only among the first few production runs, they are working on a solution.

These machines are only a few weeks old, and it may take a little time to get the bugs out. I have absolutely no doubt that Apple will either fix the problem, or replace all of the defective machines in a very short period of time, just as they have always done in the past.

By comparison, just look at how long it took Gates to work the bugs out of windows.........oh wait.....they haven't quite got it yet.

Since the Mac is now built with Intel chips and will run Windows 7 without a problem, you are just going to have to get used to the fact that nasty Microsoft users, such as myself, are going to be buying Macs and ruining the party.

I'm not interested in an OS war. I don't care what you run on your computer. If you'll notice I even agreed with you about the business use of PCs...I was simply saying if you are not here to help others you are really not doing this thread any good by being here.

Blah blah blah, investment banker this my brother the chair of that...no one cares. If you really wan't to make the jump to mac their are plenty to choose from, you can even get one of the 24 inch models for cheap on the refurbished site. Or if your brothers setup is so good why don't you get that. If in some way you think you are actually going to discourage any of us from staying with this computer...good luck. Oh and just so you know, my replacement machine is working fantastic, no issues. Too bad you have made your decision, your really missing out. Atleast you've got M$ to get you through all these sleepless nights spent dreaming here in the Apple forum.

I agree. Like I said I've had no problems thus far and the fact this problem isn't all over consumer watch's radar and Apple has not been forced to address it publicly tells me a pretty small percentage of computers are affected by this. Lets face it, Apple sells 1000's of computers...not a couple hundred, If everybody was affected this thread would be a lot longer than 30ish pages...most of which are posts by the same users.

I hope I will not be counting myself among those affected.

Another important question that has not been addressed.

Has anyone experienced any data corruption, or project problems related to this issue.

Personally, I have encoded several 60+ minute videos, and the projects came out perfect, even though the machine displayed the flickers during encoding.

That would seem to clearly indicate that, at least in my case, that the problem is limited to the display, and probably not related to the cpu or graphics card.

If you have experienced any data or project corruptions, please mention them when you post.

I doubt anyone will argue with Windows/Office being king of the business world, but I have no idea how you make the leap in logic to Snow Leopard being a plaything. There are plenty of industries where Macs are in fact the standard, such as publishing and music production, and millions of Mac users of all professions happily use it to get their jobs done. Your condescending tone is extremely obnoxious and entirely unnecessary.

I am about to order a 27" i5 iMac. Should I wait until that problem gets fixed or should I just go ahead and get it? What do you guys think? I was really going to order it tomorrow morning but I get on the forums and see this topic... Really freaking me out.

Whatever may be going on with the iMacs at the moment, Apple's customer service isn't affected. So don't worry, be positive. If you want a new iMac then go ahead and order one. Should you receive anything less than a faultless computer then it will be replaced. I should be receiving my i7 replacement within the next few days. I'm not worried. I've had many Apple products over the years, all of which have been faultless. I don't have to assume this one won't be too.

Just got my iMac less than 6 hours ago, and i've seen a grey screen flash & horizontal flickers...im installing all the disks to see if this still happens.

Day 1, and i have to send it back...wow

P.S. Is it just me, or isn't the mighty mouse just awful! I really was hoping for full 'multitouch' 3-4 fingers like on my macbook trackpad..but instead i struggle to move thru applications, i thought i could do it with the swipe of a mouse, but its 2 finger basic.

Maybe you can do what the other guy did. Go the a store and ask them to give you one with a serial not lower than W8947. You still have a chance to have problems but i think, learning from this forum, that it's more or less a stable batch.
