Q: New iMac 27inch screen flickering/tearing/shutoff

I have been experiencing some problems with the all new iMac 27inch display.
At non-fixed intervals i will get one of the following:

Screen distortion/flicker somewhere random in the screen (feels like it is more in the lower part) that looks like a horizontal bar of about 2-3inches just popping in and out of the screen.

Screen will go completely black for a second and then come back on. Sometimes 2-3 times in a row.

Somebody else already made some video-clips about these problems, I am experiencing exactly the same behaviour.

Just to not that in the course of writing this post my screen has flickered 13 times and has gone black 2 times.

Can you post your batch number? It is the first part of your serial number, i.e. W8946 is week 46.

yup, today i turned my imac on, and the screen is now flickering every other minute, and I've had it go black for a brief second about 3 times in the last 20 minutes. This *****. With Applecare, can I just take it to the store and get a new one or what?

Yes, keep exchanging it until you get one that works!! I've had to do it 3 times until I finally found one that is perfect.

I'm having the same problem now.
I just got my i7 back from Apple repair.
I had the grinding noise problem AND a burnt out pixel.
Apple repair fixed the fan noise and replaced the screen.
But now I'm having this issue.
    Serial starts with W8945.
I can't believe I have to take it back into Apple tomorrow to have it repair again!!!
This machine costs WAY too much for having these problems.

Mine is W8947, no problems, i even ran itunes visual thing while playing music for an hour and had no problems. I really don't think it's a hardware issue, but more so a driver issue that effects certain cards. Keep ******** at apple and they'll force the manufacturer to fix the problem.

mine was running fine for about 2 weeks, then today I startup, and get a barrage of flickering and momentary black screens. This gets annoying real quick. Need to get this thang to apple.

The new iMacs are not the first to use the 4850 GPU. It was made available last May as an option in the 24" models.

While I would like to think driver,... BUT only shows up on certain card is a stretch, since that would mean hardware, anyway thats just spliting hairs isn't it ? I have not read all posts ( just most of them ) so far I think 947 looks good but again some people get the problem weeks after so I like most people have no clue as to whats wrong so keep exchanging until either a software or hardware fix is implemented. bunch of stuff now wondering.

Shipping ( being banged around ,"no shock sensor strickers " )
    Model buuild date
    Electrical
added software ( although some are problem right out of the box )
    migration issues etc

Uggghhhh. Back to using Windows laptop now, so painful by comparison, but afraid to order another iMac until I hear that they figured out what was causing this.

    I've gotta figure a lot of people have heard about this at this point and that Apple would want to let it be known they found and corrected this, but who knows, maybe their sales are so good it doesn't matter. {Sigh}

It seems everyone has heard of this except Macworld!

    Even my local newspaper.

It will suddenly become a "story" for Macworld when Apple fixes this.

    Should be retitled MacPravda.

I've ordered a 27" i7 with 8GB. Got the invoice today and its showing serial as W8948xxx which i'm guessing is a week 48 ?

Having read all the screen cracked/doa/flicker problems here's hoping that it turns up and works. This is my first Mac and I hope the experience is a positive one!
