Q: New iMac 27inch screen flickering/tearing/shutoff

I have been experiencing some problems with the all new iMac 27inch display.
At non-fixed intervals i will get one of the following:

Screen distortion/flicker somewhere random in the screen (feels like it is more in the lower part) that looks like a horizontal bar of about 2-3inches just popping in and out of the screen.

Screen will go completely black for a second and then come back on. Sometimes 2-3 times in a row.

Somebody else already made some video-clips about these problems, I am experiencing exactly the same behaviour.

Just to not that in the course of writing this post my screen has flickered 13 times and has gone black 2 times.

So a step towards the guilty... from this post, LG panel doesn't seem to be the affected part.

We are in week 48 according to US standard, but in week 49 according to the rest of the world (ISO 8601). This happens once every 7 years on average and is because the week starts on Sunday in the US and on Monday in the rest of the world. Given the date on my machine, Apple either uses the ISO standard or ships computers backwards in time.

    dicktwi,

Can you please tell me what week your i7 is?

My i7 is due to ship on the 11th of this month and I am seriously thinking of canceling my order due to all the flap I'm reading in these forums. I will be receiving a week 50 computer - 4850.

    Thanks for your help.

It flickered again last night so it's going back. Rare as it is, its defective and it bothers me. I'll play it safe and get a full refund and wait until it is 100% confirmed that these issues have been remedied, and then repurchase.

Very good. I'm sure it will all be resolved in the near future now that these problems are becoming widely reported and Apple can see more people electing to take the refund and wait rather than a replacement which doesn't hurt their pocketbook. Not sure what I would do if I also end up with some problems as the nearest Apple Retail Store is several hours and a long boat ride away which precludes any in-store repair there. Of course we have local resellers authorized to do repairs but they wouldn't know where to start until Apple Engineering diagnoses the problems accurately.

What a shame. This is another prime example of why Apple needs to step to the plate as soon as possible and make some kind of reassuring statement that all will soon be well in Macintosh land.

I hope that you will reconsider your decision. As many people here will attest, Macs really are outstanding machines. This current situation is just a bump in the road, as Apple continues to plow forward, and introduces new and better products. Within a few months at best, everyone will have forgotten all about the current developments, and will be happily using their spiffy new iMacs...and without any problems!

    Just wait and see!

I am actually having the flickering/tearing issue with my 24" LED Display when it is connected to the 27" iMac. The LED Display will flicker for about 10-20 minutes after the iMac is turned on after sleeping overnight or while I'm at work. I am in contact with AppleCare but the agent did not have a solution for me and had to refer to engineering. At this point, I'm waiting on a response from him.

I have replaced the iMac one through a retail store and both times received iMacs manufactured in week 40.

Caper, depending on your immediate needs, you might just wait awhile for the dust to settle. It won't be long... probably the week after you buy the kick* PC! We all understand your frustration with the reported problems but the Apple return policy is there if you need it and you are not apparently encouraged by the people without problems who have reported their satisfaction here. I don't object to your approach but encourage a little patience that will be rewarded. Once you switch, I think 99%, or more, say they'll never go back. All the best whatever you decide.

Warren, you must be joking. They will be fretting about the i9 or i11 or the i13. Apple had the audacity to release an even faster Mac etc.

Just for the info, i got my 3rd imac working perfect for the past 15 days (week 47). I'm a heavy adobe and movie user. Never had a flicker or something else. Hope it stays like this.

I think most experienced Mac users realize that when it comes to living on the very edge of Macintosh technology, it is a no-win situation. What we purchase this month will already be a dinosaur in six months, and we will be lamenting to ourselves "Oh, why didn't I hold out and wait just a little longer? I could have had that faster, better machine."

Oh well. "Asi es la vida".

Well, that might or might not be true for the flickering, but the panel is still more likely the cause of the yellowing than the card, even if the card were the cause of the flickering. (My iMac had noticeable yellowing AND exhibited the flickering problems starting less than 48 hours after getting it. And after seeing this going on for so long with more and more people STILL getting new machines with the issue, I'm beginning to regret taking the gift card and thinking of a new Windows PC myself, like some other posters...)
