Connecting Cinema display to dvd player/ use as television.

Hey guys,

So I just bought a cinema display, twenty inch, to go with my Powermac G5.

Sadly my TV is broken, and I want to connect my Apple cinema screen to a DVD player to use as a replacement TV when not in use as a computer. (I'd prefer not to use the apple mac as a dvd drive itself, because of the wear and tear on the drive with constant use). Is there any problem using a apple cinema display for this purpose? Do I have to get a converter box or such like? My DVD player doesn't have a dvi output and firewire; it only has s-video, the usual analogue in/outputs, and component video. So I'm not sure what will work, if anything.

Maybe this is a bit basic, but I'd appreciate any advice on the issue.

The Apple display will only accept a DVI input. So you'll need a DVD player with DVI output, which I don't know if one even exists.

So there isn't some kind of converter that will take a DVD player's output - in whatever form - and convert it to DVI? Might that be possible?

Also, the display takes firewire... might it be possible to run the dvd player's analog outputs into a camcorder and then go from the camera into the screen by firewire? That's just an idea ... any thoughts?

There probably are devices out there that will take in analog signals and convert it to DVI. But I'd bet the image quality would be not too great, and it seems like using a hammer to crack an egg - simply not the right tool.

Firewire on the display is just a hub, nothing more. If you did connect the DVD player to a camcorder that supported video input, and then recorded or directly outputted to firewire, you'd still have to have the computer running and software to view or record the data from the camcorder.

How bout the Samsung DVD-HD950 Hi-Def Conversion DVD Player. Says it's HDMI/DVI compatible. Would this work?
