    Change hardware, then you have to clean out nvram.

    Never use older version of Mac OS to repair permissions than the one you use. If necessary, do a clean format and install and setup an emergency boot drive partition.

    With G5 1.6 I wouldn't be investing, I'd be saving and shopping for $1000 iMac or even Mac-Mini or something. Even 2006 Mac Pro which go for $900-1100.

    I took the HD out of the old machine and installed it in the new machine - the new machine runs perfectly with the suspect HD, so I highly doubt this is a drive or a software issue...

    Also, I installed the boot HD from the new machine into the old - the freezing happens no matter what hardware I install in the old machine...HD, RAM, video card, even the battery.

    I'm left with the conclusion that it's either a problem with the processor or the logic board - am I wrong about this? I haven't swapped processors because I have no experience doing this - I would hate to screw something up with the new machine.
