If you have a 64 bit system, you need to download the 64 bit installer or you will not get the correct drives for burning or the iPhone/Touch.
It is generally best to download from the apple site and choose save, to save the installer on your PC before running it. Do you get the "Run/Save" popup?
Perhaps if you gave a little more detail about exactly what you were doing and what the result was, particularly any error mesage.
Then perhaps someone will be able to help.
Apple offer this help for the "not a Valid WIN32" problem,
If that does not resolve the issue, try downloading the installer from Apple using a different browser.
If you are using Internet Explorer try Firefox or Chrome.
You could also try disabling virus checking briefly while the file is downloading and then whilst attempting to install.
