Oct 28, 2009 12:43 PM in response to johannes Winding (Johannes Winby Rick Schoew,I have the same problem. Suddenly I can't insert a disc. It appears to hit some sort of barrier before it's half way in. Any thoughts? -
Nov 24, 2009 6:20 PM in response to Rick Schoewby achin1,I have suddenly noticed the same problem. CD or DVD stops on insertion. I can force it in and the optical drive (Combo) plays OK and does eject, but the very difficult insertion worries me. Any solution found to CD/DVD insertion problem? My inclination is to take it into the "Geniuses"! -
Nov 30, 2009 3:41 PM in response to achin1by achin1,Here's the latest. Took Powerbook into the local Apple Store. "Genius" took the Powerbook into the back room, came out and said I needed a new optical drive. Cost would be in the $300 range! Genius suggested that I check other, independent Mac repair places to maybe get a better price on the replacement.
Just about decided that an external USB/Firewire optical drive was the preferred choice for an older machine like the Powerbook. Also continued to snoop around the web. Found something that recommended resetting the PMU. Guess what, did that, now CDs and DVDs are sucked into the drive just like they used to be!
Try resetting PMU! -

Feb 25, 2010 10:54 AM in response to johannes Winding (Johannes Winby brad1st,I've got a similar problem with my PowerBook G4 1.5ghz. The drive will accept a disc, grind away for a few seconds, then spit the disc out. DVD, CD, doesn't matter. It won't keep a disc in. System Profiler recognizes the drive, but the drive just doesn't work. I'd like to fix this without having to replace the drive. I plan I using this laptop as my music storage/player hooked up to my home theater system.
any ideas? thanks gang! -
Feb 25, 2010 11:58 AM in response to brad1stby eww,Run a cleaning disc through the drive. A large proportion of optical-drive problems are due to nothing more complicated than dirty lenses. -
Apr 19, 2010 10:39 AM in response to johannes Winding (Johannes Winby Tim Knight,My machine joined in the revolt this morning. Simply won't accept disks. Tried everything including resetting PMU (see earlier) but nothing works. -
Apr 20, 2010 11:47 AM in response to Tim Knightby Tim Knight,Apple works in mysterious ways.
Was in midst of trying to work out how to reinstall system when checked the disk drive for umpteenth time and it accepted DiskWarrior which then did all sorts of cleanup.
Perhaps these setbacks are sent to make us better people!
