spinning color wheel

When I am using my Mac Book pro I frequently (every few seconds sometimes!!) I get a spinning multi-colored wheel and I am unable to do anything as the computer freezes for anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or more. What is causing this? I have installed all of the updates as they are available.

This MAY be the problem. If you have a hard drive that is not factory original and if you have installed the EFI 1.7 update this can be what causes your problem.

On the other hand, if you are using the same drive, same RAM, and nothing else has changed with respect to hardware then a good starting point is to us Disk Utility and Repair Permissions and Verify Disk. If the disk needs repair boot from the Install DVD and use its DU and do the repair.
