Direct download of 3.1.2 upgrade

I have problems when trying to download IPhone upgrades through ITunes. Instead I used Firefox to successfully downloaded iPhone1,2 3.1.2_7D11Restore from iclarified. The .ipsw file is now on my desktop, however when I open it, ITunes opens but does not begin the update - my phone is plugged in and shows on the ITunes screen.

ITunes still asks me to upgrade my software, but does not recognize that I have downloaded it. How do I use this file.

Press the option key (on a Mac; it's the Shift key in Windows) when you click Update, and you'll be prompted to locate the .ipsw file.

Pressing the option key while clicking on the .ipsw file does not bring up a menu. Pressing "control. while clicking on the file does give me a menu but "upgrade" is not listed. It does give me an "open" option, but nothing happens when I click it.
