23" Cinema display poor color consistency

I just hooked up my brand new aluminum Apple Cinema HD Display 23 after waiting for weeks for it to arrive. I was pretty disappointed when I immediately noticed the far left and right edges had a dingy yellow tint to them when viewing white windows (such as Finder windows). I also noticed a darker bluish vertical band just to the left of the center when working in LightWave which has a gray background.

So to test the color consistency I then switched the desktop to a medium gray and hid everything else. Sure enough, there was a subtle, but noticeable bluish vertical band about 3" wide just to the left of the center. I then switched the desktop to white and could also see that the far right and left edges were slightly dingy yellow about 2" wide on each side.

I recalibrated the display 2 - 3 times and tested various brightnesses and viewing angles. No matter what I did, the color problems persisted...

I had this $2000 23" Apple HD monitor attached to the Mac with a $400 17" Sony DVI LCD right next to it as a second monitor. The Sony wasn't as good at wide angle viewing, but performing the same gray/white desktop tests showed nice consistent color across the screen. For $2K this HD monitor should have at least as good color consistency as a $400 DVI LCD...

I'd be curious to see how other people's HD 23 monitors hold up with these simple tests. Set your desktop to solid color gray and see how consistent the color holds across the screen. Do the same with solid color white...

Since I run a high end multimedia studio, I need consistent color across the screen. I bought the Apple Cinema display because I thought it was the best I could get...

I packed the monitor up and my associate has just gone to the closest Apple store to see what can be done... I hope this is just an isolated problem that can be quickly resolved. Hopefully I just got a bad monitor and hopefully Apple will just replace it with one with better color consistency...

I'll post the results here...

Thanks,
-MikeS

Well, have any of the original owners of "problem" 23" screens had them fixed or replaced satisfactorily (other than DD) so far?

I've been waiting to try to have Apple resolve the color issues with my 23" ACD (already replaced once) but I haven't been encouraged by some recent posts of people just giving up and getting refunds instead.

Great, my display has devloped a dark stain that runs vertically on the left side of my display, but I dont want to send it in until the other issues are resolved. Of course, if I send it in i wont have a display for at least a week, and I cannot afford that right now since im in the middle of an important project.

Of course if I do send it in, the most that will be fixed will be the stain.

Come on Apple, FIX THIS.

Sadly it's probably time to get refunds if you still can. I've literally met a brick wall on several attempts to get Apple to respond, like the others, no luck.

If I go that route I may look into the Eizo panels, they have a 5 yr warranty and are actually built for professional work, which is what most of us were hoping to get for $2k, when we saw it adverstised that way. The price drop on the Cinema Display may or may not have anything to do with the problems, but that's just salt in the wound. To their credit, they might be primarily focused on the new neato consumer items like flashram iPods (with no screen cause that would just mess up the neato design and provide unneeded control over the songs you want to hear) then there's the new low-end CPUs they are selling to use up spare G4 parts. (sorry, couldn't resist) They may not be concerned about this kind of stuff right now, maybe when the hype settles a bit.

I have had the same problem with my 30" where it has a pink glow in all 4 corners. As well as burn in of the previous image when going to black on the top pat of the screen (like when playing a DVD).

There's a weird middle glow at center from bad back lighting. I couldn't exchange my monitor either because other wise I would have to purchase another $249 warranty. They only give 30 days to do anything as I purchased this with my new G5.

This is my 3rd monitor with these problems not to mention bad pixels on every one I have had.
I have been using this monitor for over a month now and the pink glaze and bad back lighting has only gotten worse.

By the why Apple says theirs nothing I can do unless I wont to get it repaired. Seeing how these monitors get banged around in shipping. I am concerned when I finally get this one back it will be worse then when I gave it.
My first was completely destroyed by FedEx. So I guess this is my 4th monitor if I was really counting.

Talk about bad luck $3299 doesn't seem to buy you anything of quality any more?
Lets not even talk about all my shipping costs to send each one back.

I have been using apple for over 13 years and never have I seen such bad workmanship.

So now I am stuck. I should of never ordered first Generation to wait 6 mo. For disappointment hardly seems worth all that money.

I wish you good luck with yours

Cheers,
Michael

I'm running a brand new aluminum HD 23 like everyone else here, which just arrived today. This is a replacement for an older 22" Cinema Display I've been using the past couple of years.

I was encouraged -not- to see the yellow-band-around-the-edge problem that I'd read about elsewhere, but there is definitely a problem with color consistency across the screen that's most noticeable at full white.

Just for background: I'm a color expert, and I've -written- commercial display calibration programs and worked with a number of different sensors, including the Gretag EyeOne, EyeOne Display, and the Monaco Optix XR. So I have specialized in the calibration of many different displays (including an Eizo CG21) and -know- what I'm doing.

The first thing I did was check the native white color temperature of the screen; it came in at between 7000K and 7100K. Maybe not a good sign; I was told earlier by another color expert that a "good" number to expect would hopefully be closer to 6700K, and that if it was up around 7400K, that would signify a defective display. This falls somewhere in between.

Next, I calibrated the screen using a Monaco Optix XR (very high quality instrument, and comparable to the more expensive EyeOne for measuring emissive displays). Calibrating to D50 left me with a fairly noticeable pinkish area that takes up about 2/3 of the screen. The rightmost part of the screen is noticeably "colder", as is a smaller vertical strip on the left. In general, things tend to shift the most towards the corners. It's like having a large, pinkish ball in that covers most of the screen and is offset somewhat to the left.

D50 (5000K) is pretty far off from the native white of just over 7000K and doing this is going to push the display harder, so I recalibrated at D65 (6500K), which is also acceptable for color critical work, digital photography and color printing, which are my specialties. The results here are better, more livable, but it's still obvious that the largish central area of the display is warmer than the corners and the regions near the edge. (as in, the entire rightmost 1/4 or so of the display).

As another proof of this, I "validated" my profile in the center, where I took the measurements. (This process measures a series of grays to make sure that the calibrated screen matches the predicted values properly). In the center, the results were very good. Small "delta E" values, as expected. But if I try to validate off-center, there are very LARGE delta E values, which prove that the measured color is both different and "off" from what was measured near the center.

I'm going to dig the serial number up for this display tomorrow, to see if that will tell me anything. I haven't read through the rest of the forum threads, but is there a known range of problem serials that I should be aware of?

Yet again. I ordered 2 20 inchers when the Alu's 1st came out. The USB and FW ports did not work on the 20's and I exchanged them for 2 23's. The first set of 23's were pink and yellow. My 3rd set is just pink.
Greedy Apple aint sticking to their root customers and this will hurt them, blah, blah, blah, I am super pist.
I complained so much to my local Apple rep that they sent me the Production Bundle which happily went on 3Bay for $1k.
Still, $4k worth of schitty monitors, jam backed in the closers half ***. If we keep stirring up schitt, something will happen, look at the 1st set of Alubooks.
Best of luck to all. Apple and STEVE, come on your rich greedy phucks, give us what we paid for.

I hate myself...for not being patient enough!
Today I received my 23" ACD (sn: 2A439....) and it has washed out colors and pink on the left exactly like the photos shown by you guys!

I'll call Apple now and tell them that I'm not satisfied with this.
From what I've read all displays that were sent to repair came back with no change, so I'll not do this for now.

Is there ANY CONFIRMED GOOD 23" ACD out there? Or did they all turn out to be as bad as the others?

PLEASE APPLE: I'm a loyal customer who spent a lot of money for this. Acknowledge and fix the problems!!

Well, I see it, and can only imagine just how egregious it appears 'in-person'. I continue to find it interesting and amazing how many other persons also have stories of Apple's repeated refusal to ackowledge problems with their equipment.

Your mention of coaxing and the Genius (whom many times know nothing more than the Apple company-line, and how to hold it) person's asking other customers their opinion are particularly telling and familiar. With an issue the way I could see it in the photos, this 'Genuis' must have been close to legally-blind to miss that with the monitor right in front of them. Apple's unresponsiveness has and continues to leave me uneasy about spendng the high-price required to get their products.

I would think Apple would step-up much more than ignore and deny their products' obvious problems, when such occurs.

Hi all,

I am just so disappointed with Apple! I was so close to buying the 23" ACD untill I read up all these reports of unacceptable standard.

Of course, I could just wait for a few month weeks or months for Apple to correct their problem on ACD. But it is their service attitude that disappoint me the most. Deleting posted messages, not acknowledging the problem...

I can bear with one year warrenty, even though others are offering better than that. I am willing to pay more for Apple product because they produce better products (But not this time round).

I really think that their service stink. With $2,000 a montior, a company should just exchange a new one for every badly faulty unit they produced. One may blame it on the production line, but a good and reasonable company should take all the responsibllity and maintain their good reputation. Wouldn't you all agree with me?

I know quite a few of us are turning to other brands like sony and HP since Apple is not such a reliable company anymore. How sad it is that they keep on behaving like an ostrich...
