iPhone 3G OS 3.1.2 New Network Problems

Ever since I upgraded my iPhone 3G to OS 3.1.2, the phone has network and reception issues. The phone goes into "searching" mode at random times and won't come out of it unless I either reboot, or turn on airplane mode and off to connect back to my carrier network. While in "searching" mode, no calls, voice mails, sms or anything comes through, so it really does seem disconnected from the network.

There have no geographical changes (my home and office are in the same place as when I had OS 3.0).

Anyone else with fresh 3.1.2 network issues?

I am having the exact same issue. I will also have full 3g bars and will be able to access the internet for a minute or two, then suddenly stop. I tried to make a call at this point & I cannot make any calls out. I have to turn off my phone and turn it back on to get the connection back, and then it only works for a limited time. I also have had the issue of no reception in areas where I typically have full bar 3g reception

I have gone as far as restoring my factory settings and still have the same issue. Any suggetions?

Mando,

I am having the exact same problem. I've switched out phones 3 times, replaced my SIM, synced my phone countless times with my Itunes acccount. The battery life is shot in a 4-6 hour timeframe even when the phone is not being used.

Apple says it is an AT&T problem and AT&T says its a 3.1.2 problem. I use my phone a ton for business, and now it's a paperweight. I'm shocked that Apple has not been forthright about this problem. The customer service has been a f'n joke. It also appears that the OS can't retro back to 3.1. I'm considering Verizon and Android. What a nightmare!!!

I too am experiencing the same issues you're describing. I'm located in southern Ontario, Canada and am on Rogers.

Another symptom I have is distorted voicemails, sounds like they are talking in a microphone with the gain all the way up.

So far my research as found that disabling 3G mode appears to at least give me my full bars back. Not sure why my wifi is low but at least I can get my cell signal.

I am inclined to believe it's an ATT issue. I am still on OS 3.0 and the problem happened to me last night. I thought OS 3.1.2 was supposed to fix a cell network interruption issue. I had to restart my iphone twice before I could get a signal again. I was in my house where I get 5 bars on 3G all the time. I almost upgraded to OS 3.1.2 last night but now I am glad I didn't because you folks are on OS 3.1.2 and still have the network problem.

I have a friend who unfortunately upgraded to OS 3.1 when it came out. It took him forever to downgrade to OS 3.0. He's now at OS 3.1.2 and loving it. My only interest to upgrade to OS 3.1.2 was to see if it addressed the cell network issues that it says it fixed. But now reading that OS 3.1.2 users still have cell network issues (searching) I am not going to. I will stay at OS 3.0.

I'm not sure why but my problem appears to have solved itself partially. When I enable 3G I now get full cell service as I did before instead of a weak signal. (Disabling 3G gave me full service which I wasn't happy with but it was more important to get cell service than data at 3G)

Anyways, here's what I did though I'm not sure it helped at all (Maybe my service provider ROGERS was doing some work on 3G service, although nobody else had the same issue).

- backed up iPhone
- I restored my phone a 2 times without success.
- Decided to blank out the entire iphone and set up the iphone from scratch without any improvement.
- I was able to load the backup on to the iphone bringing me back to where i was at step 1
- Disabled 3G mode for a few days and decided today I was going to try it out and see if enabling 3G would still reduce my cell signal and surprisingly it didn't!

I seem to now have the issue where wifi signal is intermittently weak but at least I have 3G with full cell service.

I realize the above doesn't present much of a solution but maybe it's related as I was running 3.1.2 fine for quite a while before the 3G no service issue appeared.

Maybe it was a temporary glitch with Rogers' network.

Well good luck.

In August, I dumped Verizon for the iPhone. During the month of August (my 30 day trial period), I had virtually no network or call issues with my new iPhone and ATT. Then came the fiasco called 3.1 and MMS rollout. I was one of the people that suffered from the coma problem (iPhone basically lost all connectivity to the network, essentially rendering it an iPod touch). Happily, 3.1.2 solved the coma problem for my phone.

However, since the MMS rollout and 3.1.x, my phone won't stay connected to the 3g network (I'm in Washington DC). Many times during the day, it bounces to Edge. I'm so frustrated right now, I truly regretting my decision coming to ATT. What good is being able to surf the web and have lots of great apps, if I'm connected to Edge?!? It is unusably slow! As I say, I did not experience this problem during my 30 day trial period (which happened to be 30 days before 3.1 and MMS). I had solid 3G signal at all times. If I had these problems then, I most definately would have returned my iPhone and cancelled with ATT. Now I'm stuck with crappy service and I'm not happy. Especially when I read about the blazing fast surfing speed the Droid is getting on Verizon!!! It's salt on the wound!!!

If your phone had no network connection problems prior to the 3.1 update and now you are having connection problems in the same locations where it worked prior to that then it is not going to be a problem with the Network, it will be a problem with the iPhone. Have you tried Restoring your iPhone as a new phone (not from Backup) and seeing if the the network problems go away? Have you tried making a Genius Bar appointment at your nearest Apple Store and having them look at it?

Deggie,

I've had 4 Genious bar appointments and Apple responds each time with the same advice. Try resetting as a new phone, which I've done. The Iphone can't keep a connection for more that 5 minutes before it starts a network search, then no bars, then Edge, then 2 bars of 3G, then 5 bars of 3G. Then starts the process all over again.

An AT&T field Op's guy told me that it is a known Apple issue and internally they are working feverishly to patch. I think it is a little of both the Iphone software and the AT&T network. It sure would be nice if both companies would level with their clients and work together to fix it. I will say that AT&T's customer service is pathetic. It's a finger pointing clusterf?@!%.
