HP OfficeJet 5510 Double-Sided Printing Option grayed-out

Have just loaded the recently released HewlettPackardPrinterDrivers2.2.dmg hp printer driver update from Apple that actually includes the OfficeJet 5510 driver whereas the 2.0 release did not.

However, the printer dialog from any app shows the double-sided print option grayed out and unselectable?

Any help?

No, didn't see anything useful in setting an option anywhere that would enable the Two-sided option from Pages. Though, I did see a command line option for use with lp and lpr.

I wonder if its property list related, but I'd need to know the specific property to set and where since I looked through all the property lists and didn't find anything related. Or is there a CUPS option I missed? Or is it just not supported in the current release?

Any other suggestions.

Thanks.

Vegetius,

So, as far as I know (from looking at the product spec sheet) the OfficeeJet 5510 doesn't support duplexing. The sure fire way to tell if the driver thinks it supports it is to open the desktop printer browser, click on the Printer Setup button, and under the Driver tab, if the driver thinks that a duplexer is an option you'll see a checkbox next to a string similar to "HP Two-sided Printing Accessory (Duplexer). If your device does have a duplexer on it (you have printed two sided pages off of it) and the screen I just mentioned doesn't have the Duplexer option on it, then clearly we missed it do to improper documentation. If this is the case, let me know and I'll make sure that we get the driver rolled as soon as possible with the addition of the missing duplexer. If it was as simple as checking this box, well then that is a lot easier for everyone.

Just trying to help.

Andrew,

The OfficeJet 5510 doesn't support a physical duplexing attachment that I'm aware of but what the driver (under Windows operating systems) does is when you select two-sided printing, the driver prints one side in reverse then after you've taken the printed sheets, turned them 180 degrees and re-inserted them into the paper tray, allows you to select 'Continue' from a dialog pop-up, after which the driver prints the other side. I expected the same basic feature under Mac OS X 10.6 since the OfficeJeet 5510 was listed as a supported printer. I thought the expectation was reasonable.

The way the option is given in the printer dialog under Layout is as follows but it's grayed out: "Two-Sided: Off". The printer dialog also doesn't have options for printing odd or even pages, or reverse order which would allow me to manually effect two-sided printing. All of these options exist under Windows operating systems.

Thanks for your continued help. Let me know if there's anything that can be done to get this resolved.

V,

As pengtao stated, the manual options are under Paper Handling. The Mac driver does not have the same "Manual Duplexing" feature that windows does. You have to print Event Pages/Reverse Order, then Odd Pages. We have expressed our desire to Apple to offer a similar "Manual Duplex" option that takes all of the guesswork out, but at the moment we don't have any way to implement it.

That being said, we are investigating the possibility of creating a stand alone app that would walk you through the process manual duplex printing with the same ease the Windows software provides.

Just trying to help.

Andrew,

With the "Paper Handling" options to print one side at a time, the few extra clicks aren't to much trouble. However, the one thing that would be more useful to me, and I'm sure others, would be for Apple and HP to support the 5510 scan and fax functions like they do on the 5610!!! Light a fire to get the scan function implemented first, fax second and the nice two-sided gui walk-through you mentioned third.

Thanks and feel free to broadcast if they eventually support these features like they should,

V
