Using Airport Express to charge iPod?

So I plug it into the wall and use the USB cable to hook it up to the iPod... yet there is no charge. From what I've read online, older versions of the APE were able to charge iPods. Has Apple changed something so that they no longer charge, or do I have a defective unit?

don't think so. i can't even get my USB light such as this going. the AE works perfectly, though

The USB port on the AirPorts was NOT designed to be a charging port which are capable of sustaining a higher current, typically 1-2A. The USB 2.0 standard for a powered port only has a maximum of 500mA.
