little or no connectivity-Windows XP SP2

Running Windows XP SP2 (in Bootcamp on MacBook running Mac OS X 10.5.8), connecting to D-Link wireless ADSL 2+ Router. This same computer connects flawlessly in Mac OS X.

As soon as I boot up in Windows XP, however, the wireless connection shows up, indicates that my computer is connected to it, and that there is strong signal, but weak or no connectivity. On attempting to repair the connection, it informs me that the IP could not be acquired. The computer's IP shows up as 169.254.13.16, a private IP. My Dell laptop (also running Windows XP SP2 and connecting to the same D-Link router), on the other hand, connects without any hitch, and shows an IP of 192.168.1.3. Indeed it shows up in the router window under DHCP clients, and so does the MacBook, whereas the bootcamp sector does not show up at all in the router window.

Have attempted to manually change the IP to connect to the router as 192.168.1.7, but this also is not working. The router is set to WEP (I know, it's lame), I've double-triple checked the key is correct.

As far as I know (or am informed by the computer when I attempted to update the driver to a more recent version), the driver is the correct version: Atheros AR5008 wireless network adapter, driver date 6/16/2007, v. 6.0.3.94.

On trying to "repair this connection", Windows tries to renew the IP, and reports "Windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action cannot be completed: Renewing your IP address..."

Ethernet adapter wireless network connection:

After having pulled out all my hair and exploited every expletive in my vocabulary and threatened to take a hammer to the computer, figured out that in my case, it was simply a matter of disabling WEP encryption. That did the trick.

Note: the computer did connect via ethernet LAN without a hitch. I experienced problems only with the wireless connection.

Whether this bootcamp XP edition will connect wirelessly with a new WEP or WPA remains to be seen.

FWIW, these are the steps I took to troubleshoot the problem.

1. Start > Control Panel > Network & Internet Connections > Network Connections: Selected the wireless network connection, and checked status, attempted to repair the connection.

2. Start > Run > CMD: typed "ipconfig /all" and hit enter. Verified DHCP enabled, network adapter version, determined that the computer was not able to obtain DHCP ip address and was instead given automatic configuration ip (169.254.13.16).

3. Still in Command Prompt, reset TCP/IP stack (Start > Run > CMD: typed "netsh int ip reset reset.log") and then reset WINSOCK (typed "netsh winsock reset catalog"), rebooted. Still no wireless connectivity.

4. Visited http://www.opendrivers.com/company/21619/atheros-free-driver-download.html, downloaded a few different Atheros drivers for the Atheros AR5008 network adapter. Updated driver manually - Windows XP rejected a few that were incompatible and finally updated to version 7.7.0.406 (32bit for Windows XP - release date 16 Oct 2009, update 17 Oct 2009). Still no wireless connectivity.

5. Ran a number of troubleshooting steps (refer to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314067), isolating the problem to failure to obtain DHCP IP address from the router. Manually assigning an IP address did not resolve the issue.

6. Finally removed WEP encryption from the router configuration, saved, rebooted. Voila! Wireless connection up and running.
