I'm currently running iTunes 8.0.2.20 to work with my iPod Touch 2G and Nano 4G. All is working quite well so I'm rather hesitant about upgrading. But more and more content is requiring an upgrade to the latest iTunes version. If I decide to take the leap, what is the best route for upgrading, ensuring that my music is not lost and that I can revert back to my current version if something goes wrong? I know to backup my library. I try to do that regularly. Should I uninstall my current version and all other Apple associated programs, download new version and install OR do the upgrade from within my current version of iTunes?

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

It is a good idea to back up the library files, iTunes Library.itl and iTunes Music library.xml before upgrading. It shouldn't be necessary but your never know... You may be glad of it if you want to downgrade. If you want easy downgrading, save the last iTunes set up file if you have it, maybe rename it iTunesseteup8.exe so it isn't overwritten by the new installer. It is safest not to upgrade from in iTunes.Download the installer from the Apple site and save it on your PC, then run it from you PC.http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/The installer takes care of any uninstalling that is needed.

Thanks so much for your input. I think I will take the plunge and upgrade over the weekend.

Thanks polydorus for your insight. I upgraded to 9.0.2.25 without incident. That gave me the nerve to upgrade my iPod Touch to 3.1.2, also without a hitch.

    Peace
