Constant Hard Drive Activity?

Hi folks,

Recently got a new 27" iMac (stock Core 2 Duo, 3.06GHz, 256MB Graphics RAM model).

It's great - not experiencing any sluggishness with Flash video or anything like that. But, I am noticing that the hard drive seems to be constantly accessing something. The drive is not "churning" like it would if the Mac didn't have enough RAM to operate efficiently. It's more like a periodic little read and then nothing and then another read - but it happens regardless of what apps, if any, I have running.

I'm thinking it might have to do with the Performance Update 1.0 I just installed via Software Update, which supposedly addresses certain hard drive issues. If I understand correctly, this update is meant to prevent the HD from going to sleep too soon - maybe it's constantly prompting the HD to read small amounts of data to prevent it from sleeping?

It could also be because this model of new iMacs has only 3MB shared L2 cache (the older 24" ones, which I used to have, had 6MB).

Or it could be because the new model is quieter generally, but has a hard drive with louder read/write activity than the older model.

But I really doubt it's that last one. And a look at Activity Monitor definitely shows more "read" activity - almost constant - than I used to see with my previous iMac.

Any ideas? TIA!

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.1), 27", 3.06GHz, 256MB VRAM, 4GM RAM - totally stock

Do a SMC reset, it's very simple to do. Shut down the machine, unplug everything from it and wait about 30 seconds. Then plug in just the power cord and start it back up. If it is acting OK then plug in any peripherals you have (printers, external HD's, etc..) one by one to ensure everything is OK. let us know if that help out.

Regards,

Roger

Hi Matthew

I can't say why or what's up with the disk activity, but in a previous discussions thread the user BandBrothers quotes +(i decided to try reinstalling Snow Leopard. Which worked and the noise is completely gone away and everything back to normal...)+

Thanks for your suggestions, folks. I reset the SMC - well, I installed new RAM, so since I had to unplug the iMac while doing that it reset the SMC as a matter of course. I've also reinstalled Snow Leopard from the included Restore DVD. I did not install the "Performance Update" this time.

So far, the HD still seems to be reading/writing periodically, but it seems less frequent and I think it's either (a) some low-level background process I have installed, or (b) totally normal, and just more noticeable on my new iMac because the machine is quieter than my old one and because the HD is located right dead-center in the machine behind the display, right at my ear level.

Dave, thanks for your reply. I don't keep my Time Machine drive connected, so it's not that; and it's not Spotlight - mdworker and the other Spotlight processes haven't been running when I've checked Activity Monitor.

I'm starting to think it's a combination of: (a) how quiet the rest of the machine is, (b) how quiet my room is, and (c) the fact that the HD is right in the middle of the screen and so right at ear level when I'm sitting in front of the iMac.

I do also notice that it happens much more when Safari is open - I think it might be related to the Flash problems others are having, as for the first time I experienced the flash-related video slowdowns others have been complaining about.

I'm hoping the Snow Leopard 10.6.2 update will solve all these issues.

If happened to me and the culprit was Safari. Now I use Camino and the obssesive disk activity has gone. I used the Disk Activity tab of Activity Monitor application to isolate the pig application (closing apps one by one till the disk stopped reading and writing like mad).
