I just got off the phone with an apple tech after I set up my magic mouse with the new software and found it didn't scroll, at all. It points and clicks though. The tech told me that it won't scroll until a new firmware comes out for my imac (2008, fall).
Did he not know what he's talking about or have others had the same experience with the mouse? It seems weird to me that apple would release a mouse that didn't scroll with a computer less than a year old. I'm using 10.6.1 and downloaded the magic mouse software.
Make sure you have uninstalled any other wireless mice and any other mouse software -especially something like USB overdrive (uninstall not just remove the preference panel).
The reinstall the Apple Wireless Mouse Update 1.0 and pair your Magic Mouse and then try.
Make sure you are in a scrollable window also! Good Luck!
That is the solution. i had a call back from the apple tech person. He had gone over it with someone else who had heard about a similar problem, and the common thread was we both had usb overdrive in our system. Mine wasn't running, but you have to run the usb overdrive uninstaller to get rid of everything. Once we did that, it worked perfectly.
That's one of the reasons why I love apple. the fellow I spoke to actually pondered the problem long after we hung up and took it up with colleagues and that's how they figured it out.
True, maybe they were googling, but at least they had bothered to do that. The first person I called spoke to a senior advisor who told him it had to be fixed with a firmware update. He didn't bother to check anything.
I just got rid of this problem just by switching the mouse to another USB port.
I had the puzzling error that scrolling down was inactive, but up and to the sides (horizontal) worked fine.
OK, I'm having the same problem and assume it is due to "usb overdrive" or a previously installed wireless mouse--no longer in use. So how do I find & remove USB overdrive? Do I need to install anything else (I have snow leopard)? And if it truly finds my new magic mouse, will it say "magic mouse"? Right now it just reports finding an apple wireless mouse. Thanks!
if your usb overdrive installation was similar to mine, check your utilities folder for a file that says uninstall usb overdrive. Then uninstall it by clicking uninstall, restart, pair your mouse again and you should first see the new pref pane.
Also, make sure you download the new magic mouse driver from the apple site (under support/software downloads) but do not download and install it until after you have removed usb overdrive. I made that mistake.
Getting closer but.... I downloaded the Magic Mouse driver. Initially it wouldn't install because I didn't have Snow Leopard version 10.6.1 (I erroneously assumed that I had the latest version because I installed the box I purchased from Apple yesterday). Anyway, I upgraded to the latest OS version, then successfully installed the Magic Mouse driver & attempted to repeat the actual mouse pairing. It instantly found an "apple wireless mouse" (shouldn't it say magic mouse?) but the mouse itself kept blinking instead of pairing. I turned it off and tried again. Suggestions?
OK, all features are working now. I used the bluetooth menu to accomplish the pairing and confirm that no other devices were paired. For reasons unknown it paired on this menu, not in the mouse menu. Anyway thanks for your help--I didn't realize that I needed to download new software. I think Apple went for snazzy minimalist packaging -- favoring form over function. More complete instructions would have been appreciated (and saved me a frustrating hour).
