Nov 1, 2009 8:06 AM in response to Antiques Galby Peggy,Welcome to Apple Discussions
In addition to all of the information in the thread Roger linked to, the most common problem is simply that AppleWorks 6.2.9 (the current version) can't open all ClarisWorks 4 or earlier files. It gives an I/O error. There doesn't appear to be a way to predict which files will cause problems. I've had it happen & not happen with all AppleWorks file types. There is no way to open them with AppleWorks 6.2.9. These files can be opened by any other version of AppleWorks 6 so I usually recommend AppleWorks 6.2.4 for anyone who might have a need to open older files.

Nov 1, 2009 10:23 AM in response to Peggyby Antiques Gal,So, is there a download for Appleworks 6.2.4???
Also, I have downloaded the Appleworks Disk Utility Repair, but I do not understand how it works. Would that help me in this situation? If so, how does it work? I have been dragging a file to the repair utility but nothing ever happens. Thanks so much. -
Nov 1, 2009 11:05 AM in response to Antiques Galby Peggy,There are no downloads of any version of AppleWorks available, only updaters for 6.2.9. You might check your original AppleWorks installer, it might be for a version other than 6.2.9 & you'd be in luck. Also, you can purchase AppleWorks 6.2.4. You could try eBay and do a search for "AppleWorks" or "Apple Works" (some people put a "space" in the name). Hardcore Mac sells AppleWorks 6.2.4 the last time I looked.
The AppleWorks repair utility is only for repairing databases that corrupted when storing on a network drive & is not what you need. Your files are most likely not corrupt, just not readable by 6.2.9.
Depending on the number of files you have (say less than 20, preferably even less), you could send them to me, I'll open them in AppleWorks 6.2.4 & re-save them for you. I keep both AppleWorks 6.2.9 for usual use & a copy of 6.2.4 to use for just this situation. You could too, just don't have both running at the same time.

Nov 1, 2009 4:14 PM in response to Peggyby Antiques Gal,Thank you so much for your answer to the Appleworks repair utility. I will look for a Appleworks 6.2.4. Unfortunately, I have numerous files. I am a teacher and have the majority of my files stored at home. Thank you for the offer of transferring my files. At this point, I have figured out that if I re-save the files in the original Appleworks 5 and then open them on the iMac, I can "copy" them and open a new page in Appleworks 6 and then save them. Long process, vary time consuming, but I just can't lose all of these files. Thanks so much for your help.
