I couldn't find any way to permanently add an entry to Classpath but here is a way to add the Derby library in Netbeans on Mac OS X Snow Leopard...

1. Go to Tools>Libraries>New Library>provide name "javadb">Add Folder/Jar
2. Browse to your derby installation folder>lib>select all jar files
3. Once you have added it to the library right click on your project>properities
4. go to Libraries>Add Library and select javadb from the list.
5. recompile and execute the program.
