You can sync as many devices as you want to the same computer. Just remember, the iphone itself only supports syncing content like music & apps with one computer at a time. However, there is no limit to the number of devices you can sync to the same computer.

Further, you can sync multiple iphones to the same itunes account.

My wife and I have 2 iPhones but when we can only sync one unless we want the two iPhones to be carbon copies of each other. Is there a way to keep them independent? And linked to separate accounts?

    They are independent.

You go to the tabs and select whatever you like to sync with each.

    It is interesting...
There are hundreds, maybe thousands of forum questions posted on this topic -- and not one clear, well-informed answer.
I thought this was going to be easy. After setting up a new device and syncing successfully, all seemed well. My device and my wife's have different names. All good.
Then my wife does a sync, and her device gets filled with my mail and contacts and calendar. This in spite of the fact that she uses outlook and I use google/gmail.
    What do we do now?

You need to select in the tabs for each phone what contacts, calendars, music, etc., you want to sync to each device. If you don't do this basic sync step, everything will be put on each phone.

I've had an iphone since June. On Friday, I purchased my husband an iphone and we purchased a new home computer. The AT&T rep said we'd need to contact Apple for help switching my itunes account to the new computer. Apple helped me make that switch very easy. Then I told the rep I had a new iphone and wanted to know how to sync it as well. She said, "you CANNOT sync 2 iphones to ONE computer unless you want them imaged exactly the same." Uh, are you serious. Her response, "yes, for some reason it just won't allow for mor than one iphone to sync." Sounds crazy. We have 2 itunes accounts. Phones have different names, obviously and I made sure to select "no auto sync" of contacts so my husband wouldn't lose his contacts. We synced his first and it put most but not all of my apps on his phone. I wish somebody at Apple could hel with this situation...there are a lot of posts asking about this and nobody can completely/fully answer. And, why would an apple rep say it CANNOT be done?

The apple rep is wrong, simple as that. You can sync as many devices as you want to the same computer & same itunes account. Itunes will keep track of each individual device. All you have to do, to keep things straight, is assign individual names to each device, then select what content under the various tabs you want on each device. From that point on, unless you change things, itunes will keep track of everything.
