IMAC, Mac OS X (10.5.6)
I never thought about that but I can see where that would definitely coincide with the issues that I was having...in that...the mouse would work fine but it would constantly lose connection and the frequency seemed to depend on how much I moved the mouse...
Looking at this from a manufacturer's prospective, it would make even more sense...
Think about it...if you skimmed off 1-2mm on each and every battery you made and you were manufacturing 50 million a month...that's a lot of savings...and the thinking on the part of the manufacturer's bean counters would be that, hey...who cares since MOST devices have those relatively long conventional coil springs to push the batteries towards the positive post anyway, so the end-users won't have any problems...
Then along comes Apple with newer battery compartment technology...
Great find apapworth77 and thanks for the post...
This may apply to very few people, but I have had the magic mouse and trackpad problem losing connectivity. This time it was batteries low; change batteries, turn back on and had not only lost MM but also magic trackpad; couldn't get either back. Searched forum; reset PRAM, etc. to no avail. HERE IS WHAT I DID. Okay, maybe I should have done this before. I moved my little tiny bluetooth received from the back of my Mac Pro to a USB port on my desktop. Instantly had both devices back. Instantly.
So the whole scraping of the battery terminals worked for me. And I didn't have isopropyl alcohol, so I used vodka. Probably not the wisest; but kitchen macgyver was all I could conjure up.
(I also just use an ordinary knife rather than a scalpel).
Hello Barry
i have had my imac for about 1-3 months now.... its only been just starting BUT everytime i may slightly bring up my mouse maybe 10mm/1cm and tap it down it freezes and it says "connection lost" then i hav to wait for mby 15 sec for it to come back.... this never used to happen and i would really like it to stop happening currrently i hav around 50% battery so i dont see why the power would do anything
Josh,
I kind of agree with you on the 50% battery "power" but that is the "Voltage" and not necessarily under load where the "Current" comes into play...
I mean seriously, how much current can a tiny little mouse draw right???...that's something I don't understand either but by putting in a set of fresh batteries, it seems to fix the lost connection problem, at least in my case it did...on several occasions...
Try it next time it happens and see if it fixes it...
It is an annoying problem nevertheless...
i just opened the little "hatch/door" thing and fiddled round with the batteries, took em out and put them back in and it seems to do the trick 🙂 now wenever i giv it a little bump it dosnt lose conection
There are SO MANY posts on this specific issue ... and I've made a "few", it's just obvious that there is a systemic problem with either the product itself, or the Bluetooth antenna in the Macbooks,The "engineers" don't/won't solve the **** thing and recall the device to those who have experienced all issues related to this product. Santa Maria .... WHY has Applw not stepped up and taken ownership of this "global problem".
If I was the Product Manager for this device, I'd kick *** and take names to resolve this, or Apple should give the PM 30 minuyes to pack up their desk and be given the old sack.
Come on already .... this is Apple, with incredible engineering resources, and it all seems to fall on deaf ears.
Enough ,,, solve the **** problem ... tin foil and pieces of paper shoved under the shell is McGyver on steroids. Unconsciable and no respect for the consumer.
Off with the PM's head Nuff said.
Kauffilms,
Well like so many manufacturers that have gotten large and rich on its end users...they tend to not respond to obvious problems and resolve the issues behind closed doors and fix the problem in newer models and deal with the "problem children" on a one-on-one basis so that they can bypass all units having to be recalled...
Lets face it...it seems that if you pull the batteries out and reinstall them or replace the batteries with fresh ones, it fixes MOST problems...leaving for less unit sto be addressed by the geeks at the Apple Stores...so why answer any blogs like this on the Net...
Apple is on top of the world and loving their profits...model after model...iPhone 5, iPad 3 (interim) and iPad4 coming soon to your Geek Shops soon...lol...
It looks like you do have a problem with your lower spring loaded terminals are not spring loaded enough or the left one is stuck (faulty). Perhaps try removing the batteries and pressing it down to see if it is stuck.
Energizer is a popular battery here in Australia. Aldi also make batteries that are the same size. So far the only 'short' ones I have found are the Eveready.
I measured them (from top of + terminal):
'Long' Energizer/Aldi: 49mm
'Short' Eveready: 48mm
So being 1mm shorter is enough for it not to work
Hope this helps.
I turn my mouse on its back when it is connected it remains connected. turn it back and works fine for a few minutes then loses connection.
no low battery message!
batteries are fine and making contact.
In normal position when it disconnects and then If I leave it a minute or two then click it connects again and remains connected for a short time then disconnects.
I have unpaired and then paired.
Turned bluetooth off and on.
It only just started to do this today. It's driving me round the bend.
Okay, I just had it happen again. Batteries went dead on the Magic Mouse; replaced no connection etc. Tried a few times, even rebooted my Mac Pro. No go. Eventually even lost my Magic Trackpad. Then I remembered the last time this happened I got it going again by unplugging my bluetooth dongle from the back of my mac and plugging to a hub on my workstation and had instant connection. All I did this time was unplug dongle from hub and wait a few seconds and plug back in same slot. Instant, I mean instant connection for mouse and trackpad. Hope this helps someone; very frustrating problem but this is twice this solution has worked for me.
dl7sc: what "bluetooth dongle" do you have for a magic mouse or magic trackpad?? I've never heard of such a thing... iMac and MacBooks have had bluetooth for a long time. Is your mac really old (pre-bluetooth)?
Sorry for the confusion. I have a Mac Pro late 2006; didn't have blue tooth; got the dongle. My option is for a very limited number of people probably but it does work instantly. And, yes, my Mac Pro is a little old but still a beast of a machine; 9 GB ram; 2 TB internal storage; 2.5 TB external storage; runs latest Logic Studio like a dream and Lion. Unfortunately will not be able to upgrade to Mountain Lion.
I was having the same problem. Put some paper between the batteries and the battery cover. This stops the batteries becoming lose and losing connection all the time. Mine hasn't lost connection since I tried this.
Yup, I am now on my third mouse and pretty annoyed that the last two must have been fine!
The problem is that the batteries are loose, you only need enough vibration to lose connection once and you're disconnected.
Some tin-foil fixed it, easy.
Just fold some up so its a couple of mm thick, then place under the negative side of the batteries in order to make the batteries a tighter squeeze.
Can drop it, wobble it, slam it and thump it and it never disconnects... previously if I move the thing too quickly it would disconnect.
Human win!
