Mighty Mouse Cleaning

I've been using my Mighty Mouse for a few weeks now (bought one the day it came out 🙂 ) and generally it's great. However the scrolling ball has become problematic in that it will scroll up left and right, but most of the time won't scroll down, as if it has got a bit of dirt on its sensors or something.

Is there any way of cleaning the sensors for the Mighty Mouse or is it a warranty job when the scroll ball fails ?

I've seen at least one other post reporting this same problem: After 3 weeks of use with no problems, as of this morning scrolling works fine in all directions (horizontal: left & right; vertical: up) except vertically down.

I'm on 10.4.2, and have rebooted, unplugged/plugged in the USB Mighty Mouse, but with no change. My track ball looks "clean" (i.e., no built-up residue to possibly cause problems).

Now pulling out the warranty card to see about a return to the Apple Store...

I believe I may now have found a way of cleaning the scroll ball that seems to work reliably for me.

I switched off the ball button in the mouse control panel and then pressed down on the ball while rolling it (as if I was clicking it while scrolling). After a few seconds of this I could hear the scrolling 'tick' start working again.

It does seem that some grease or crud is getting on a sensor/roller, but it does appear to be clearable 🙂

Mine will now only scroll down, not up. The first time it happened, I had the bright idea of wondering if it was a software bug. I unplugged the mouse, plugged it back in again - and amazingly it then worked perfectly.

Today it's stopped scrolling up, but unfortunately unplugging it doesn't make any difference.

I might try rebooting just in case. It seems that the ball is moving, but it's not making the 'false' sound (which is from a small speaker, right?) and it doesn't scroll.

I'm not certain it is a physical problem? That would be terrible if we're getting this already!

Hi

I jumped for the MightyMouse as did you, and I wondered how long it would be before some crud interferred with the rollerball function. Tonight it stopped scrolling up.

I read the posts - and although the compressed gas solution looked promising it didn't work.

What DID work was to unplug the mouse and press down quite firmly on the ball and the roll it vigorously up and down. A bit of this, and plugged in it was working again.

There is a very different "feel" to the ball when it's got something stuck in it - the small incremental geared feeling is absent. I'm afraid this fussiness doesn't bode well for Mighty Mouse ball scrolling longevity...

Thanks gentlemen - keep 'em rolling

/m

Same basic problem here, in my case, it would not scroll up. Both techniques for repair worked. First I unpluggged and pushed the ball down hard and rolled it around. Things improved. Then I took it out to my workshop and used my air compressor, and that worked even better. Now as good as new. Too bad it is apparently going to be a chronic problem. Only had the dog-gone thing a month. And I am already so hooked on using the scroll ball.

I too have a scroll wheel that will not scroll down, but does go up, left and right. Intermittent at first, it has gotten worse over the past few weeks. The "feel" of the wheel is different when attempting to scroll down, it does not offer resistance as it does when scrolling up, left or right and does not make the same loud clicking sound. I tried re setting preferences, unplugging and re plugging, re starting and even calling Apple. Apple support told me my serial number could not be right because the serial number should be 11 characters but mine was 13 etc etc. This took 15 minutes of going back and forth. Finally they suggested that I buy phone support for $45.00 or take it to a store - but I bought it direct from Apple (draw your own conclusion about how helpful this was). I tried compressed air spraying it directly into the area around the scroll wheel with no result. Finally, I got a wash cloth and pressed down REALLY hard on the little wheel and scrolled - trying to clean the thing. After about 20-30 seconds of doing this, it started working again.

Yup,

just a 'me too' I'm afraid, could scroll in every direction except down !

No compressed air to hand so tried the 'holding down firmly and rolling it around' method and it seems to have cleared it.

Two things worry me though,

i. This should not be happening after 1 month of use

ii. Apple's customer service seems a bit daunting... It used to be really good, you got through to somebody in Ireland and they could help you out, now I find myself getting passed around all over the place -worst one was India where I couldn't understand the person on the other end of the line and they couldn't understand me ! -not a good situation for a relatively simple problem (this was trying to get a replacement for a mini DVI - Video adaptor which has never worked !)

Still, the fix seems to have worked for now...

Isn't it amazing how quickly you get hooked on the little ball though !

How did we ever manage without it ?
