iTunes randomly mutes itself

I'm running iTunes 9.0.2 (or whatever the most recent version is) on Snow Leopard (10.6.1) and for the last while I've noticed iTunes will occaisionally mute itself. I leave it running pretty much all the time, and sometimes when I return to my machine and start playing music, I've noticed iTunes (and only iTunes) has become muted.

I CANNOT for the life of my figure out what triggers this, it seems to be really random. Things which could affect it…. I usually have a screensaver running when not at my machine, or the display will also turn off after a while. I doubt those should affect it, but who knows. I've never had this problem before installing Snow Leopard on my Mac (and it's a clean instal).

Any ideas? It's rather annoying.

Very strange - my iTunes is no longer auto-muting. I hesitate to say the problem is fixed, but I've been listening to music for the last 30 minutes without interruption/muting.

The only incident of note that has changed in the last few days is that I brought my Mac Air into the Apple Store in Ottawa to have the hinge and display replaced (faulty hinge is a known problem).

I didn't mention the muting problem, nor did I take note of what build of iTunes I was running before leaving the Air with them. I can't imagine they would have touched the software/OS on my computer, but, for reference, iTunes reports in as being version 9.0.2 (25). I know I was running 9.0.2 before, but hadn't noted that build number. Might be significant.

I haven't done anything else of significance that would have resolved the muting issue, but am thrilled that it seems to have been resolved.

Having the same problem with iTunes muting in Snow Leopard and it is driving me crazy. About every 5 minutes the volume will go mute. I then have to hit the Volume Up or Volume Down key on my keyboard to get the volume back. As mentioned before in the post "It doesn't actually "mute" anywhere in the system, it just stops emitting sound." Exactly. And only in iTunes. I am streaming from Radio Paradise but also happens with music on my machine.

What makes this extra irritating is that
I can no longer broadcast music from my
desktop to friends and fans because the
sound usually last no longer than a few
songs and goes silent. I'm ready to go
back to my Snow Leopard disk and begin
from back then. I suppose that I'm going
to have to upgrade iTunes somewhat so I
use my iPad, but I can't really pinpoint
at what version when this problem began.
It appears to be a gradual phenomenon.

I am running the new Imac 27 and lastest version of Itunes and have the same problem. Can not play more that a few song and there is no sound either on the imac internal speakers or via airtunes. In other programs the audio works. The song time indicator is still marching along the the volume bar is at 3/4 of full. Moves to the next track, but no sound to the speakers.

Also having this problem on my MacBook Pro, but not specific to just iTunes. Intermittently, the volume icon appears and gradually the volume decreases to nothing. Often the volume icon remains (showing no vol) as though the keyboard button were continually being pressed. Attempts to turn it back up just result in it going back down again. Same if I try to turn it back up in System Prefs using the slider; its automatically reduced again. Ive reset the PRAM and run the apple hardware test, with no joy. Be interested to hear if anyone has resolved this.
