4x3 aspect?

I was surprised to record some stuff on my built in iSight with my MacBook Pro...and the aspect was 640x480?

The resolution is acceptable for a "web-cam" type of device...but I was hoping to find some sort of 4x3/16x9 selection in preferences...no such option.

Did Apple forget about the transition to HD? Or the fact that the MBP screen is in a widescreen aspect? What's up with that?

Hello -Jason,

Everything we do with iSight is software controlled. To do what you ask, you need to use software that can offer a choice of aspect ratios.

iMovie is one app that allows you to select the different aspect ratios for your video recordings. Make the selection using the " Aspect Ratio:" choices bar in the iMovie > File > Project Properties... > General menu.

If you want to check for other apps that might be able to record in 16x9, you can start your search with a web search or an examination of the features of the video/movie clip capture apps this list:

You know...my naivety of Macs may be to blame. I was using Photobooth as the recording software. Is there a better recording software? What is suggested? The link you provided just hung up on loading...I'll try again later.

I didn't mean to come off jerk-ish...I really am enjoying my new MBP...it's an amazing piece of equipment...

You know that what software you use depends on what you want to do. Photo Booth is better for quick, fun snapshots or video clips, but it has VERY limited capability. If you want to do more than quick, fun snapshots or video clips, another application will be "better."

What is suggested?

For the purpose in your original post, I suggested iMovie as a "better" app.  User uploaded file
If you had trouble finding iMove, look for its iCon in your Dock or in the folder that opens when you use your Finder > Go > Applications menu command.

The link you provided just hung up on loading...I'll try again later.

I checked the link when I posted and again now, and the link worked correctly for me both times.

If you tried to copy the link and paste the address into your browser's address field to launch the page, be sure you did not copy any leading or trailing invisible characters like spaces or carriage returns.

I do not infer any such intent when you ask good, honest questions about how to get started with your new Mac. All of us need help starting out.

For more help, http://www.apple.com/support/mac101/ is a GREAT introduction with lots of info.
In particular, the Get me working and playinglink will give you a good introduction to several of the most popular and useful Mac apps.

If you are a switcher from PC, the Switch 101 link there might be worth a look, too.

...with settings setup for 16x9...It appears the CAMERA is in a square format... Is that correct?

No. iSight is NOT a square format camera. The apps we use to operate and control our iSights let us select rectangular aspect ratios. (Software controls our iSights. There is no way to manually operate iSight.) Regardless of iSight's "format," there are two ways to remove the "pillar bars."

(1) Using iMovie 8 with the settings I originally recommended to you, you should be able to eliminate the "pillar bars" by changing the " Video Size:" choices bar setting in the "Capture" window.

(2) The other way to remove the "pillar bars" is to return to the Photo Booth window size you were using when you posted your original question. Leave the " Video Size:" choices bar setting at 640x480 and return the Aspect Ratio:" choices bar setting in iMovie > File > Project Properties... > General" to " Standard (4x3)." This will remove the "pillar bars", too, but it will also return you to the 4x3 aspect ratio.
