Spinning wheel of death at login

Hi, my iMac just froze up on me. So I had to do a hard shutdown. When I turn it back on it goes to the login window. I sign in, my wallpaper comes up, but than the color wheel just spins. Nothing on my desktop shows up. Not even the bar on top. I'm freaking out, is there something I can do to try and fix this quick?
