Ipod touch home button won't work?

I was putting a candyshell case on it and after 15 mins of it on it the home button stoped but i could power off i did that but still didn't work then i updated to 3.1.2 and it still didn't work it has done this to me b4 EDIT: the restore did not help what happened to my iPod
