Ichat Not Sending or receiving Messages

Hi there, I use ichat and for some reason I suddenly can't receive or send a chat message to anyone on my list. They see me as online but it is as if the message goes into outer space when they hit enter. It is the same for me, I type my note and hit send and nothing. Anyone have this issue? It was working fine, I rebooted and now it won't work. I did try rebooting 2 additional times.

Thanks!!

Hi,

Go to iChat Preferences > Accounts > Server Settings (Deselect "Use this Account" in the Account info tab on the way)
Change the port to 443.

If it persists after you log back in again go to your Home Folder/Library/Preferences and delete com.apple.ichat.AIM.plist and restart iChat

Hi,

Deleting the com.apple.ichat.plist and the one I suggested will make the Start Up Screens reappear.

The Deletion of just the one .plist (AIM for AIM/Apple IDs and Jabber for the Jabber/GoogleTalk ones) will prevent the need for the Start Up Screens.

Personally I have never found that deleting the iChat Cache files has solved anything.

I am glad though you have it working again.
Thanks for letting us know.

Hi,

Now go to the System Preferences > Security > Firewall.
What Setting do you have here ?
If ON go to the Advanced button and select Allow Signed Apps and make sure iChat is in the List. (Stealth should be Off as well.)

In your router or modem have you allowed the ports iChat uses ?

Hi,

I tried what you said. In summary, I reinstalled IChat, set port to 443, corrected the firewall settings. Yet, anything I type remains in the "type field" and does not get transmitted. I have tried it in the office and home, both places where I had no difficulty earlier. Screen names show up on other accounts as being online.

Thanks in advance for your help
Jay

Ok,

If this is an AIM Name then delete com.apple.ichat.AIM.plist
(includes AIM, ICQ, Apple MobileMe and older @mac.com names)

If it is a Jabber name delete com.apple.ichat.Jabber.plist
(Includes GoogleTalk names as well as Jabber IDs)

Restart iChat.

Hi,

On the Reinstall, did you run the COMBO installer afterwards ?

In this case Skype proves nothing.
Each Download of Skype comes with it's own Port listed in the Preferences. It varies from Download to Download.
The way the Mac firewall works is the App is Certificated in Leopard and Snow Leopard and you do not have to open specific ports.
If you are using UPnP in the routing device Skype will work.
If you are not and are using port Forwarding but have not Port Forwarded the port listed Skype will use a Fall back port (Normally port 80 - web Browsing or 110 - Mail) to get around this and Skype will work.

At this Point go to the Application Folder and do "Get Info" on iChat (Apple Key and I together).
In the panel that pops up in Plugins is everything marked as On ?

If this is true the go to the View Menu > Messages and chose another Style other than Balloons (you will have to open a Text Chat window even if you send nothing)
