stopping auto refresh on iphone

i've got an iphone 3G white,

i like to read news stories or photography tips on my iphone (using the web browser) and when i stop in the middle of a story either because of a phone call or break is over i just leave the story/tip up on its own page because i want to come back to it...

when i do get back to the story/tip, i select the page i want but then the page refreshes when i select it, grrrrrrr!!!! now i have to wait because im now in EDGE coverage :P :P :P

is there any way to stop that refresh action when selecting an old webpage???

There is no offline mode for iPhone Safari, but you can put the phone in Airplane Mode temporarily, which prevents refreshing the page. However, you also can't receive calls, SMS, email etc.

i forgot to mention earlier but im running the latest version of iphone o/s- 3.1.2

any other thoughts?

This is not correct. When in airplane mode, the phone has no connection to the internet at all, and +can't refresh+. If you open Safari when in airplane mode, you get a warning "Turn off Airplane Mode or Use WiFi to Access Data." If you select "OK" (instead of "Settings"), the page opens as is. The only exception is if you enabled WiFi after Airplane Mode, and you connect to the internet via WiFi.

i tried yer steps and safari is still auto-refreshing when i select an old page
(gives me the popup error- safari cannot open page because not connected)

safari can attempt to refresh, it just wont be able to get any new data

the page doesn't load because the communications have been disabled, its not cached... (lightbulb moment) thats what i need, webpage caching... any thoughts?

when i select a page, it comes up and then it refreshes on its own, no action by me other than the single selection tap, grrrr

It may depend on how old the page is, or how it's set up by the sever to refresh. I just loaded the (full version) NY Times. After enabling airplane mode, I was able to view it as well as a 2 day old macrumors.com. OTOH another old page wouldn't load due to lack of connection. It's the web page setup that determines this.

but on nytimes, macrumors, and maclife, they all refreshed the instant i touched each one

i even went to just two safari pages and closed one so that the only page left would come up automatically and the remaining page still refreshed

what is your secret??

and with some testing with a 3GS, this problem seems to be much less/non-existent
note on the 3GS- i didn't activate airplane mode either, it keeps the pages, hmmm

3G- pages refresh the instant i go back to it
3GS- keeps the page until you refresh it (even if going back to it more than once)

Yes, I use a 3GS. It has 256 MB runtime memory - twice the 3G. Some pages will auto-refresh anyway.
