Q: iMac won't wake up from sleep using keyboard or mouse

Apr 11, 2011 4:52 PMby iDrifter,Hi imode; I'm not too sure about the backlight board being the problem. The last time my iMac experienced the wake-up issue was back in January. I did nothing other than retimed the screen saver, energy saver and unchecked the Wake for network access. I'm not saying the problem won't return, its just that replacing the backlight board might be a little much. I believe somewhere on this thread, someone mentioned the problem did occur after replacing the backlight board. -
Apr 11, 2011 5:10 PMby Stampguy,That is exactly what I did several months ago - re-timed screen saver and energy saver. The problem has NOT come back. I put the iMac to sleep every night manually, it does it by itself after 3 hours during the day. Since my changes to those two parameters, it has been waking up properly every time. I have a blue tooth mouse and keyboard, plus three external FW800 hard drives. Then again, maybe it was all the swear words I used the last time it froze up - maybe I scared the **** out of it

Apr 29, 2011 9:06 PMby johnfromredondo beach,Ok this if F'n ridiculous!!!! I have a brand new iMac, when it goes to sleep, it will not wake up unless i unplug it. I never had a problem with the mac mini i replaced. I have 2 external drives hooked up so i thought maybe not putting them to sleep would help but it still happens. I adjusted the monitor to sleep after 45 mins and the computer to sleep after an hour. No deal, the **** thing still needs to be unplugged before it will restart. I would expect this from a PC but not an apple. Its going back to the store tomorrow. I cant believe there are 16 pages on this topic and still no solution.

Apr 29, 2011 9:21 PMby cows48,I know this is a bit of a long shot but I have had similar problems and also with the sound greying out and not accessible when the batteries are low in my keyboard and mouse (still connected but low) - try changing them to good quality batteries if you haven't already done so. It's worth a try.

Apr 30, 2011 10:00 PMby riccigfrommississauga,dude heres wut i did aite, go to preference, energy saver, uncheck wake for network access, put the computer and screen to sleep at the same time and finally disable the screensaver! i was so happy this worked because i dint want to go pack up my imac and return it back to the store, disabling the screensaver was it for me, btw, you dont have to unplug it just press the power button once and it should wake up! good luck still!

This suggests a problem in the power management application rather than hardware. btw my display has just been replaced.
Based on the suggestions in this thread, i will turn off the network wake function and will see how i get on...

May 13, 2011 8:33 PMby imode,When your iMac doesn't wake up, try toggling sleep mode by pressing CTRL-SHIFT-EJECT follow by RETURN (twice). If it wakes up then your backlight board is most likely defective and will need to be replaced (I have heard that there were quite a number of defective backlight boards installed in iMacs). This is what happened with mine and since the backlight replacement 3 months ago the problem has not reappeared.
According to a hardware expert I know who repairs macs, he mentioned 2 recurring problems with iMacs:
1. Defective backlight board that doesn't enable the backlight when the computer wakes up. You can tell because you can access the computer on a local network (or feel the fans cutting on) even though the screen in dark.
2. There seems to be a bluetooth issue (which is unrelated to sleep mode) whereby connectivity randomly drops. This could manifest itself in ways that "seem" like bluetooth isn't waking the iMac. Also, was having difficulty selecting keyboard options on boot-up do to the keyboard being unresponsive. I had the mainboard replaced and now this issue is resolved as well

May 14, 2011 6:43 AMby markosaben,apple is killing me. same issue with one of my two imacs. goes to sleep and wireless mouse or key board will not wake it up. further, logmein, icmp ping or smb from another computer on same network also do not wake the computer up - WHICH IS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE SLEEPING!
/apple/system_preferences/energy_saver/computer_sleep is set to NEVER
this is complete crap. apple needs to get this fixed asap rather than sweep it under the rug and force customers into the dance of resetting everything in the machine over, and over, and over...... FIX YOUR IMAC

May 15, 2011 9:51 AMby Jason Manning1,I have recently had the display replaced but still the machine was showing no signs of life when trying to bring it from sleep (no fans, no heat in top right....nothing). HOWEVER...Since turning off the network wake function the issue has disappeared.
markosaben is right - apple need to fix this.

I am a newly converted apple customer and let me tell you after furnishing the home with 3 imacs, they all have the same problem. the 27inch though is by far the one which has totally annoyed me. It will not wake up at least 1-2 times per week (the others 21inch may do it once a month - but dont get used very often). I contacted Apple, but as my machine is not under any apple care (just out of hardware warranty) they cant help me. It seems obvious that they have an issue yet are not stepping up to the plate, something I thought apple was good at doing. My last hope is that after reading the posts here and making the 'wake from network' change that it might do the trick....here's hoping!
Please dont make me regret leaving windows for apple.....please !

I have a powered usb hub connected to my iMac. when i disconnected it, i had no problems with the computer waking from sleep. I just purchased a new hub and now everything works fine. it must be something with the hub not going to sleep and freaking out the computer or something. If you have a hub connected, disconnect it and see if that solves the problem.
