upgrade to AppleWorks 6.2.9

The upgrade does not work. It starts, looks at my hard drive, gives an inaccurate description of where the application resides (with no button allowing me to change it) and of course does not upgrade when you click continue
(says location not good). Since this is an Apple product, why doesn't my software update take care of this?

Hi Steven and welcome the Apple Discussions.

I'll work backwards thru your questions/comments.

AppleWorks doesn't get updated via Software Update. Apple are the only people that can say why. But I'd guess that it's because Apple rarely update it, because it's a very old program that was difficult to update for Software Update, and because it will be replaced by iWork over the next two or so years.

Let's now talk about the location. The Updater requires certain things to function correctly. First, your AppleWorks must be in a standard location like the /Applications directory. If it's not in this directory (eg maybe you've put AppleWorks on the Desktop) then the Updater won't be able to locate AppleWorks.

Secondly, the Updater will only update a copy of AppleWorks with a matching language. There are many AW 6.2.9 Updaters. Each one is for a specific language. Often people download the English version when they really want the International English version. NB The English updater only updates AppleWorks for Americans. The International English updater only updates AppleWorks for the UK, Australia, New Zealand and a few other countries. The Updaters for the various languages can be found here:
<http://discussions.info.apple.com/webx?linkprocess_@@.3bc1ec18>

Try your Updater again but make sure AW 6.2.9 is in the /Applications directory, and that your Updater speaks the same language as your AW 6.2.9.

Hope that helps.

I have exactly the same problem after installing Tiger. I have vesion 6.2.7 installed on a PowerMac G5
It all began when I found that I could open AW as normal and type a document and save it but when I tried to open it it could only be opened by MacLink Plus Deluxe.
Hoping that it was the update 6.2.9 that I require I downloaded it.
I then emtied everthing out of the Preferences File relating to AW ie the com.apple plist and Appleworks. I removed AW manually from the Applications Folder.
Next, for good measure, I did an "Uninstall" from my AW CD and then
re-installed AW in my Applications Folder
After all that making certain I tried to install the AW 6.2.9 update and all that I got was a window telling me that it could not find AW in my Applications folder!
I had removed any preferences that may have become corrupted prior to installation---what more is there that I can do other than buy iWord!!!

Dave,

Re-read the paragraph with the link the the post above by Dale. There are several websites with links to incorrect updaters. The UK Apple site in particular has been known to point to the north American updater for quite some time. The most reliable link is from the entry page of this forum (it's the first @ sign down). That link will take you to this page (same link as Dale gave) where you can choose the appropriate updater for your AppleWorks 6 installation.

Hello Peggy
Many thanks for your prompt reply to my problem. I followed your advice and downloaded the International English version of the AW 6.2.9 Download which installed beautifully without any promlem. However, when I carried out another trial run with a document and saved it and then clicked on its icon to open it, low and behold, up jumped MacLink Plus Deluxe yet once again on my screen ready to translate it.
It suddenly occurred to me that it would be worth while removing MacLink Plus from the Applications Folder to see what happened. As soon as I did that all was well and AW is working as normal---thank goodness.
The trouble had been that MacLink Plus was somehow beating AW "To the Draw" and taking the initiative in the opening process.
This never occured with "Panther".
I thought I had better record the outcome of all this, which was triggered off by your excellent help and assistance in getting the correct download.
I feel certain that other users of MacLink Plus are encountering the same problem.
Once again many thanksfor your able and generous assistance

Hello again Peggy
There is no setting in the preferences of MacLink Plus that enables it to become the "Default Opener". In the preferences of AppleWorks under "FIles" there is the facility of a tick box to say "Remember last translater" which can then be made the default setting. I have tried it in both states and it makes no difference.
The only time when AW works correctly and opens a saved document is when MacLInk Plus is in the trash can.
It would appear that MacLink Plus is pretty virile too, I have a copy stored on my External Hard disc and it comes up first to translate an AW document when the icon of my Ext.HD is on the desktop!
I shall just have to leave MacLink Plus out of the system until I need to use it.
I don't use it very often but it is handy to have for the odd occasion when I do.
It would seem that this situation is a quirk peculiar to OS X 10.4
Best wishes and thanks for your help
Dave

I do not mean the MacLink preferences. Select the problem file in the Finder & "Get Info" - Command + I - & see what is the default program for this file. MacLink should not be involved in any way opening an AppleWorks 6 file. If this is an AppleWorks 5 file or someother "foreign" file type, MacLink will come into play, albeit briefly.

If this is just new since you upgraded to Tiger (& I'm not sure I asked before), did you use Disk Utility to repair permissions & delete all of the AppleWorks preferences listed in my user tip, AppleWorks has stopped working correctly?

Hello Peggy
All this has only happened since upgrading to Tiger.
Permissions have been repaired and I removed everything appertaining to AW from the Library preferences.
You are ahead of me when you say "select the problem file in the Finder and Get Info-command+1-" can you please enlarge on this action for me and I'll have a go. You obviously know much more about Macs than I do----thank goodness!
Thanks again

Hello Peggy
Sorry, I was slow of the mark there, I thought that you were refering to the icon of the application rather than that of the document.
I've done as you advised and found that it was set to Open With MacLink Plus. After selecting Open With-Appleworks 6.2.9 the document opened with AW as it should whilst MacLink Plus was installed.
In there MacLink plus is designated as the default programme for opening AW which makes it recur when the next document is produced.
How do I switch off the default on Maclink Plus and switch Aw 6.2.9 as the default programme?

Hello

As infamous insomnia is striking again, I will respond.
Select an AW document's icon
cmd + i to open the Show infos window.
From the pop-up menu, choose "Open with application"
select "AppleWorks 629"
click on the button entitled "Change All".
After that, every file stamped with tha AW icon (the ones whose creator is named BOBO) will be open by AppleWorks 629.

Hello all of us.

As you may see, night was short for me.

As Peggy understood well, I was not trying to "usurp" a thread.

I thought (and it was true) that the question was issued from Europe so a quick response from Europe may be available faster than one issue from the USA.

Peggy and me are accustomed to this kind of "ping-pong".

I'm remembering that at my first appearances in this forum, this was a small problem between us but after some exchanges, it was clear that we are not fighting each other but trying to help the best way.

I wish to ask all of you to put the name of your country in your ID field, as well as the localised version of the app. This may be useful because some of us are aware of some features linked to local Apple services and of some features (oddities ?) introduced during localisation process.
