Bluetooth Number Pad

I recently purchased a Microsoft Bluetooth Number Pad for my iMac. It works fine - except each time I use it after the number pad has been sleeping, the Keyboard Setup Assistant pops up and tells me that my keyboard (meaning the number pad) cannot be identified. If I close the screen, the number pad works fine until the next time that it wakes from standby. I am unable to complete the assistant because it wants me to press a button to the right of the left shift key. Since its a number pad, there is no shift key! Just in case, I've tried pushing each of the buttons on the number pad, but to no avail. Any thoughts on how to keep the Keyboard Setup Assistant from popping up? Thanks in advance.

Microsoft Bluetooth Number Pad? Just looked that up. Pretty cool - did not know such a product existed?

What happens of you press a key, and keep pressing that key a few times. The Keyboard Setup Assistant should eventually +give up+ and tell you the keyboard cannot be identified. And it presents a screen where you can choose the type manually. You can then select the choice that says ANSI, and click Done.

Hmm... Since this is a Bluetooth device, have you gone through the +Set Up New Device+ process on System Preferences Bluetooth pane, which launches the Bluetooth Setup Assistant?

Please post back if you get it working properly. If it works well, this device would be a nice addition to the Apple compact wireless keyboard, for those occasions when the number pad would be useful (and avoid the wasted space the rest of the time when the number pad just gets in the way).

I did go through the Bluetooth set up assistant - and it was just after completing the Bluetooth set up assistant that the keyboard set up appeared for the first time. I then went through that assistant, chose ANSI and it was fine . . . until the next time. I've gone through the keyboard set up a few times. I've also deleted the device from the Bluetooth menu in the System Prefs and "reinstalled" it.

Before giving up, I'm going to try it on my MBP after I upgrade it to Snow Leopard this weekend. I can't imagine that will help, but I've seen stranger things. I'll post whatever I find, but in the interim, I'm open to other suggestions. For the reasons you stated, I'd really like to keep this number pad. Thanks again.

According to this article, that keypad is a companion to the

[Bluetooth Mobile Keyboard 6000|http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2009/sep09/09-09bmk6000pr.mspx]

When I searched Microsoft.com for any custom driver for it, it points to a download for +IntelliType Pro 7.01 for Mac+. So perhaps the keypad also needs to have this driver installed to operate properly. I found the driver from here

http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/downloads/default.mspx

Also, based on Microsoft's product description, this product is officially supported for Mac OS X (it says "10.4x–10.5x"). I assumed earlier that it was Windows only (officially). So you may want to contact Microsoft tech support, since you are their customer. 😉

Thanks! Installing the driver seems to have done the trick. Before posting last night, I visited the MS site first, but all that I could find were links to the MS store where I could buy the keypad. After awhile (plus some Google searching), I finally gave up and came here....

If it starts misbehaving again, I'll post back. The only annoying part is that after installing the keyboard driver, I now have an eject symbol by the clock at the top right of the screen. When I click on it, it says "SuperDrive F12" in greyed out text. (Also, the driver install requires a reboot - another trait sure to offend some OSX fans.)

One last caveat, whenever the keypad goes to sleep (after about 5 minutes), the "Connection Lost" symbol appears on the screen for a second. (This happened even before installing the driver.) For me, that's not a deal breaker as long as the keypad continues to wake up properly. It does take a few seconds for it to wake up.

Thanks again.

The +eject symbol by the clock+ does not sound like part of this custom driver, because you can put it there normally. If you want to remove it, press the Command key, then drag it off the menu bar. You can also drag those +status menu+ icons around this way, to change their order on the menu bar. But you can only do that for the Apple-supplied ones; the third party items seem to only appear in the order installed, and to the left of the Apple items.

Didn't the keypad come with a disc with the driver software, or at least instructions that say +go here and download the special Mac driver+ ?

I like Microsoft's input devices; I use one of their basic wired optical mice, and prefer the simplicity and sturdiness of it over anything else. Plus it uses the built-in Apple generic USB mouse driver. I'm not sure I'd want to install the complete Microsoft keyboard driver, just to use this keypad. 😉

But I'm glad you got it working; sounds like a good option for people with the Apple wireless keyboard who need the keypad occasionally.

Right again, sir. Thanks. I was able to remove the eject symbol. I had never seen it before, so something in the keyboard driver install must have caused it to appear.

The keypad came with no disk. The instructions simply direct you to go through the Apple Bluetooth new device set up - and are very careful to remind you to push the return key on the keypad after entering the Bluetooth passkey. The booklet did have a link to an MS support site after all, which says:

*(Mac) My Bluetooth keyboard or number pad cannot be identified.*
For the Microsoft Bluetooth Number Pad, choose Any Device instead of Keyboard. Keyboard identification is not necessary for the number pad.

However, I can tell you that I tried that option first and it did not help. The "Any Device" setting simply seemed to cause the Mac to look for any and all Bluetooth devices and then categorize them itself - my wife's cell phone (in another room) as a cell phone, the keypad as a keyboard, etc.

lets see. hopefully this will clear up some things. i got the Microsoft BT #pad. I love the look and feel and despite the following issue, im still keeping it.
If you look at MS website youll see that the #pad IS NOT sold separately but rather as a set with the keyboard. if you managed to buy just the #pad, when you pair it to your Mac, the system recognizes that it should have come with the keyboard; Hence the "press the button to the right of the left shift key". its atempting to find the keyboard that it should have stayed with. So on that note you can just skip that step.
here comes my only disapointment. with the #pad came a set of manuals (mostly blah blah) but one in particular indicates that uppon pressing the Num Lock key at the top right corner of the #pad you should be able to toggle between number keys and secondary function keys such as Del-(delete) PgUp, PgDn, Ins-(insert) and such.... +It doesnt work!+.
The #pad was designed to function fully with its sister keyboard. Being the case that if you dont have the keyboard, this function will remain inopperable, so all youll have is a #pad - which is what I realy wanted in BT tech anyways. So I can tolerate this hiccup. That, and that ive been unsuccesfull in finding ANY other BT #pad thats BT and Mac compatible. So.. Im keeping it. =)
The only thing I thing I have to figure out now, is how to stop that screen that pops up, searching for the keyboard, everytime the #pad automaticlay shuts down after a few minutes of inacctivity to conserve power.
hope this anwers the why it happens. Guess now were back to square 1. how do we fix that pop-up?

I just got the combo pack (keyboard and numpad), installed Intellitype and Intellipoint Pro 7 (its latest version). The keyboard is working fine without pop-ups but the numpad still refuses to stop telling me that it is unidentifiable. Everytime I try to identify it my mac thinks I am hitting a key on my apple keyboard. Also the numlock feature on the numpad still doesn't work 🙂 I love the keyboard but this is quite annoying.
