Problems with new Bell/Telus Network in Canada

In Canada Bell and Telus turned on a new nation-wide 3G HSPA network a couple of days ago. This, of course, broadened the spectrum of iPhone service providers in the country to a grand total of 4.

However, the new network is, well, new, and that means there are bugs. Some of those bugs might be getting diagnosed as problems with the iPhone itself, as mine was. I'm wondering if anyone else has discovered any issues with their iPhones on the new Bell/Telus network in Canada. Reporting them here might help other users avoid a wild goose chase such as I spent the day on yesterday.

Here's my problem, summed up. I live in Whitehorse, Yukon. My iPhone thinks it's in Edmonton, Alberta. Rather, location services on my iPhone locates the device as being in Edmonton. So when I open the Maps app, it displays my location as Edmonton. In MobileMe's Find my iPhone it's the same story.

In Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars, when I create a new account that includes a calendar, such as MobileMe, the time zone settings default to Edmonton.

And under Settings>General>Date & Time, when I turn on Set Automatically, the iPhone defaults to the time zone that Edmonton is in (which is one hour ahead of Whitehorse).

I spent a few hours on Apple tech support yesterday, where they (not surprisingly) misdiagnosed the problem as being a faulty iPhone. But I have verified the problem is also exists on a second local iPhone, so it's clearly a network issue.

Anyone else having similar, or totally different, problems with the new network in Canada? Share them here!

You'll need to wait for the carrier(s) to sort it out, in essence. About a year ago, AT&T was making some changes to it's network and for some weeks my iPhone consistently localized to Marietta, Georgia as I was sitting in my office in Boston. After a few weeks, AT&T solved their issues and I 'returned' to Boston.

While you're 'in' Edmonton, try a (virtual) visit to the WEM... 😉

I am having the same issue with drops in service here in St. John's, NL since activating my iPhone five days ago. My friend has an iPhone on the Bell network and my iPhone is on the Telus Network. We both notice drops in service all over the main core of the city with the 'No Service' being more frequent on my Telus iPhone despite Telus and Bell sharing the same network. Once I power off and restart the phone, the coverage returns to full bars. Telus is saying it must be a phone issue and to contact Apple for service... Very frustrating!

I'm in NB with an iphone on Bell since the Launch on Nov 4th. First issue I had was Visual Voicemail not working and not getting any notification of voicemails at all. This was fixed as soon as I finally got around to syncing with iTunes which advised me there was an updated 'Carrier Settings' file from Bell. I let it update and bam! my visual voicemail starting working perfectly.

I also was not able to receive calls from some friends' cells (Telus and their partners only I think). They would get 'Call Failed', etc. before it would even ring. The was resolved in most if not all cases by programming/dialing my number with the area code in front of it like 506-xxx-xxxx and then they could get through.

I had an issue which started 2-3 weeks ago with the phone dropping to no bars but still able to make/recieve calls and use data. The bars would reset if I rebooted the phone and switched Airplane mode on then off again, but within an hour the bars would drop off again. Also would occaisionally get No Service in areas with perfectly fine service and a reboot would correct it. Well about 3 hours ago I tried the fix I found on page 1 or 2 of this thread that said go to Setting > Carrier > 'Wait for it to load' > Choose 'Bell 3G'. Since then I have bars and they go up and down with respect to service but don't go to zero anymore. So far so good.

I still have the issue where it takes a full 8 seconds of dead air before anyone calling me hears the ringing sound. It seems to wait until the exact moment my phone starts to ring before the person calling hears a ring. If anyone knows a fix.....

Edit: Sorry I had said I fixed my Visual Voicemail problems with a Sync but it was actually after I choose to Update my iPhone that it informed me there was an updated 'Carrier Settings' file I could choose to install. And I installed it.

Markis7276, I am having the exact same problem. I'm in St. John's, NL and I have a 32gb 3gs. I'm a constantly losing service. When I reboot, I'll have full signal, then literally 2 minutes later I'll have "No Service" again. The phone was working perfectly up until last week (Purchased on Nov 9). The only time I'd have no service was a couple of spots on the Trans Canada Highway. The funny thing is I'll have no service, and my girlfriend sitting right next to me in the car will have full bars on her 8gb 3G. Other times she'll have no service and I'll have full signal strength. I have tried restoring my phone and re-inserting my SIM card. I have just removed all my applications and will see if that helps. If not I'll try restoring my phone as "a new phone". And if that doesn't fix the problem I'll be calling apple. I'm out of my 30 day exchange from Bell, but still with in the Apple Care Coverage. Unfortunately we don't have a "Genius Bar" here in St. John's.

When Bell became an ISP, they had lots of problems and until the newspapers got a hold of the story, Bell just dragged its feet.

For me, sometimes, the problem with the network is resolved by going into airplane mode and off airplane mode. Otherwise I need to do a power down every day or two.

I doubt it, but it sounds like a memory leak !
