Can you set bluetooth to AUTOMATICALLY authorise device

Hi

On my old phone I could go down my list of previously used bluetooth devices and select "authorise device" meaning each time my phone came in the vicinity or range of that device again it would automatically connect. I only use my bluetooth with my car's inbuilt handsfree bluetooth kit which I know the Iphone can only currently be used to connect to. I can connect fine to it manually by going into my Iphone bluetooth settings, see my car's bluetooth listing in my phone and manually click it to connect to it. Unfortunately I have to do this each time I wish to connect to it, even if I leave my bluetooth running on my phone all the time. Is there a way to automatically connect to it similar to "authorise device" as used on most phones?

Is an update required to get this functionality? I am weary of doing any updates following the negative things I have heard but am willing to give anything a go to get the bluetooth connecting automatically to my handsfree.

Thank you very much for any help and information.

ps My handsfree kit is factory inbuilt on my Nissan 350z and as mentioned my iphone can see it fine (as my old phone could) - I just need to know how to "authorise this device".

Been thinking about your problem, and the only thing I can suggest is this, you won't lose any data, just your time:

1. Make sure that itunes, under preferences, is set to NOT AUTO SYNC when an ipod/iphone is connected.
2. Connect your phone and right click it in the device pane & perform a backup.
3. Disconnect your phone, plug it into an outlet, not your computer, under settings, reset, select ERASE ALL CONTENT & SETTINGS. Don't panic, you're not gonna lose any data. Let the process complete.
4. Once complete, connect your phone to itunes, DO NOT SYNC, right click and select restore as new. DO NOT BACKUP. Once complete, disconnect the phone, turn bluetooth on and see if it will pair properly with your car, & perform properly. If it does, reconnect your phone to itunes, right click & this time select RESTORE FROM BACKUP, select the backup we made when we started. Your phone is now back to the state it was when we started, no lose of data, & hopefully pairing with your car properly.

Hi thanks for your reply. I only have my handsfree listed in my bluetooth devices. It pairs absolutely fine when I manually click on it. Just wondered if there was a way to make it connect automatically without me having to click on it each time I get in the car? I have removed it and re-added it several times without success.

Thanks again for any help.

Yes bluetooth is enabled because I can toggle it on and clearly see this. When I toggle it to "on" in the settings my car's device appears in the list but in order to actually connect to it you need to use your finger and tap on the device in the list, only then it actually connects - so at this point it is all manual... not happy.

My last phone could see my car's device in it's bluetooth list and would connect automatically and my girlfriend's phone connects to my car's device automatically.

Thank you for any help.

it should be automatic (after you connect it for the first time). I have a no-name no brand car kit, after the initial conenction it is auto when I am in range.

Having said that I did have an old phone (Windows Mobile 5) where I had to do it everytime (same car kit).

Hi everyone - just to conclude this thread I have found the answer myself and Apple have confirmed it too: the Iphone will automatically connect each time BUT only if I leave the bluetooth on permanently.

If I turn it off (which I will always do after leaving my car to save battery) and then turn it back on (when I return to my car the next day) the phone can see my car's handsfree device in the list because it was previously connected but it does not automatically connect - you have to manually select the device in the list - so unfortunatley the answer is the Iphone cannot currently automatically authorise a previously connected device - unless you leave the bluetooth always on which is not very practical. My old phone you would just need to turn it on again (one step) without the need of manually selecting the device from the list each time after turning it on again.

Does anyone know why Apple not developed bluetooth functionality which even the most basic phone has these days?
