The dreaded lollipop

I have read as much as I can about this topic...and nothing seems to work.

I have several new G4 emacs in a computer lab...they are all 256 mb RAM...actually, some are 512.
We are getting the spinning lollipop/ball . I have emptied the recent items aliases (which shouldn't be a problem when there are only 4-9 items in the folder...NEW computers....2 weeks out of the box....
I did the "repair permission thing" ... and this morning I have had three computers fall into the spinning lollipop mode while using Appleworks.
These computers have Tiger installed, and we've done the software updates that pop up.

We use Appleworks because it has always been easy to use, it has been a dependable program that came installed on the computers...making it much more cost effective than having to purchase that MS stuff for an entire school.

Any more suggestions??

Hello

You may look at "Energy Saver"

AppleWorks will be more efficient if you enter "System Preferences > Energy Saver" and check the checkbox entitled:

"Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible"

As you are using Tiger, it may be useful to check if in fact it's not Spotlight indexing the volume.

Are you only getting the beach ball in Apple works, or in finder?

If it is only in apple works then I would initially say it sounds like you may be missing some of the apple works fonts?

Re-installing apple works would correct this (system updates dont).

Let us know if you notice a specific point when the beach ball starts spinning?

It (the beachball/lollipop thing) happens only in Appleworks. It happens when kids/users start to type, change the size of font...sometimes before the first letter is typed...basically whenever it wants to.
It is NOT just one computer. These are new computers...from the factory with AW installed.

I may have done some excessive controlling -- in Tiger there are Parental controls and I may have set them a bit to strict....limiting access to font book...I have reset and will see how Appleworks does under the constant use by students Monday morning....

Fonts are one of the things that used to cause me no end of problems... you can have several versions of the same font which get installed with new software(appleworks / mircosoft office / system / adobe) .. they all have different homes on your hard drive. Move them and you might have problems - particularly system fonts. Like any file, these fonts can also become corrupt, which could cause the problems you are having.
I now use extensis suitcase & font doctor to manage my 1000's of fonts - ideal for designers but maybe more than you need for general school use?!
Let us know how changing the access setting goes...

Hi Cathy,

Welcome to the discussions and the AppleWorks forum.

Although you say you've emptied the Recent Items folder, I still think this is the most likely cause of the problem. Do your students all use the same login? OS X creates a separate set of files for each user loggng onto the machine, and it's possible that the Recent Items folder you emptied is not the same one as the student uses when (s)he logs on.
